This book has been sitting on my shelf for about five years, and after several false starts, I've finally begun reading it. (I have a similar affliction with Garcia Marquez, so I'm hoping the rewards will be similar.)

Love the Alex Cross books. While not the best, this was a really good read.

This is a very different book from all the others in the Summer Book Club - but I wanted to make sure the girls didn't feel left out if they aren't into the adventure and mystery of the books I reviewed this summer. My Forever Friends is part of the Friends for Keeps series of 4 books. Based on the adventures and thoughts of four 4th grade girls with all the hangups, conflicts and attitudes (remember what that was like?) of girls at that age - if you're daughter has Frenemy's or Best Friends this book will be right up their alley! This book revolves around Ida May and Jenna who are forced to spend time together when Jenna begins to spend time at Ida's home every day after school due to her mother's difficult pregnancy. Jenna is very list oriented, needs to have everything planned/followed and hates having her schedule changed (at least if she doesn't decide to change it). Ida ends up spending time with Rachel (Jenna's little sister) more to support her as Jenna has a mean streak and bosses Rachel around and puts her down quite a bit. I don't know how many of you remember the middle school grades and how mean the girls could be to each other? Being best friends with one girl one week and then best friends with another girl the next week. This book reminded me a lot of that awkward age and how much I hated the stress and upheaval during that time. BUT, on the other hand, girls who read the series will identify with Ida May, Jenna, Stacy and the other girls in the Friends for Keeps series and should enjoy them thoroughly. I'm going to rate this book a 4 - I didn't particularly care for the book but it is very well written, the author has a great understanding of girls at this age and I'm very sure that girls in the 4th - 6th grades will identify and understand exactly what's going on. And maybe they will learn some tricks they can use to get through this period in their young lives. =D

A girl whose mother is absent from her life tries to make sense of her struggle through the eccentric and quirky characters of her hometown, complete with a dog. No, no, it's not "Because of Winn-Dixie 2!" The Higher Power of Lucky is a sweet little story, well-written, and likeable for all ages - despite the slightly familiar plot and controversial references to male anatomy. And it was written by a librarian...all the more reason to like it.

It's not exactly an action book, but it has nice psychological commentary.
Quite a cute book, but I didn't finish it, I got bored!

If you're into eerie alternative realities with equally disturbing time travel plots, then this is a riveting read for fans of the genre.

I keep thinking about the characters even though I'm done with the book, wondering what they are up to. For me, that's a sign of a really great book. I liked (or liked to hate) just about every character in this book. I also like that the author included an afterword about her own experience with being cared for by a black maid and her struggles with writing this book.
Loved it. It was really slow to get into--lots of hard names and facts--but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Truly inspiring.
The climactic finale of the Lensman series, this one continues on where the others left off. Civilization is in a tremendous battle for supremacy of two galaxies. The Lensmen are the force of Civilization, and the Kinnison Family is the ultimate in evolution of the Lensmen. They are tasked with bringing the war to a successful close by eradicating all vestiges of the evil masterminds seeking to overthrow society. Only by developing their full potential and working together will they be able to conquer, but can they do it in time? If you liked the others in the series, this one is a great climax. The book (as do the others in the series) presume a hyperspeed pace of action but include enough new ideas to keep one occupied. If you are a strict stickler for quantum physics, you will get bent out of shape about some of the proposed technologies, but it makes for a fun story.
