Very similar in style and content to Book of Common Prayer, Didion again explores issues of American middle class identity and foreign policy - this time through the eyes of a successful Congressman's wife (who has continued a long-running affair with an intelligence operative she met as a teenager).

A really weak book! The story was interesting enough but at the end left you flat! Would not recommend.

an essential read for anybody who even remotely likes sci-fi. set many standards for cyber-punk literature that carry on to this day. hard to put down. very well-written. cool future technology. ancient mythology mixed in. fun!

Moon Shadow, an 8-year-old Chinese boy, migrates to America to join his father Windrider. The father and son meet for the first time in their life because Windrider sails to Aemrica before Moon Shadow was born. Seeing his own father as a stranger at first, Moon Shadow learns to love and respect his father as time passes. They together make a living by doing laundry for the "white demons" as they called. I was a little disappointed by this book because I was looking forward to learn more about the Chinese culture and making connections to it. However, as it turns out, it's different from what I have expected. The story focuses on the Chinese immigration during the late 1800s and the life of the immigrants in San Francisco. There are places where the events described are very similar to what I have learned in class. Many of the Americans viewed the Chinese as foreigner or "aliens" and treated them poorly and without respect. Sometimes I found this book boring because of the details and confusing names.

I bought a copy of this years ago and it just sat on the shelf as something I should read. I had never read any Dickens before. I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Dickens is pretty funny, especially in the first third of the book. All in all, a very entertaining tale.

Great history written in a super fascinating way. You will not be able to put this down. Tells the story of the Hooverville's and how people in Washington (politicians and everyone!) acted leading up to WWII. Even talks about secretaries and what the had to wear or get fired. I've read this like 3 times now.

i read "slaughter city" back as an undergrad and loved it. This is a fantastic series of plays that take social issues and turn them into a crazed fever dream. I can't imagine what these look like on the stage, but they were fantastic reads.
