I liked this book a lot: Lots of family sagas and plot movement. Yes, the language is a little bit archaic, but hey, it's classic literature! Becky Sharp, the orphaned daughter of a Parisian actress, is very determined to make do all sort of ridiculous social machinations. She's a piece of work. I thought that the movie with whats-her-name was a poor rendition of the novel.

Awesome history (of both rats and nyc), lore or mythology, physiology/biology... loved all of it. If you are familiar with the documentary work of Mark Lewis, this book reminded me very much of it.

Two Winchester's in a week, oh yes! Well I was enjoying Krakatoa when I went shopping for my BCUK NSSEBS partner and this was on her wishlist, and then I really didn't want to read the book next at the top of Mount Toobie (apologies to those of you getting a feed of this, you'll be out of your misery soon) so ... I had never heard of William Smith, nor indeed did I have any idea just what his map was of when I took the book up to the counter. I can now claim to be much better informed on both counts. This biography has certainly fulfilled its avowed aim of lifting him and his work from obscurity, and placing both in their correct place in the development of aspects of modern scientific thought. However it does seem that I am going through a phase of reading works of non-fiction with hyperbolic titles. Once again, Simon Winchester cannot be faulted on writing lucidly and sympathetically, but he could sometimes do with even tighter editing - both this book and Krakatoa did suffer from a few repetitions, sometimes highlighted by almost identical phrasing, that were spotted by even this rapid reader. I appreciate that there are some mysteries surrounding the man's wife, but the nuggets dropped about her throughout the text suggest that there is more to be revealed about Smith the man by exploring their relationship. Feel like writing a spot of historical faction anyone?

DD has always been my favorite Marvel hero; dark and disturbed like Batman but waaaay more psychotic! After all, he is blind, you know! If you want great art and a great story, this is a good place to get both!

Made me remember how good these songs are... but that's about it. The writing is very tedious and seems forced. Nothing new or exciting really.

I didn't think I was going to like this book. We had to read it for school this year, and from all of the cultural references I had heard about the hunting and killing, I was dreading it. Honestly, I thought it was grand. We psychoanalyzed every character, which is the point of the book, but I just loved it, watching the progression of the society. One thing I could live without is Golding's meandering style. I couldn't stand some of it.
