I had heard a lot of interesting comments about this book, so I decided to check it out. I think that it has a great theme behind it.. Just Be Yourself! I think that the pictures are amazing because the author uses so many great colores and facial expressions. However, I feel that people do need to be aware about who they read this to and make sure that the preface it with the theme because I feel that there is not enougth explanation at the beginning of the book about why all these horrible things are happening to the girl. The end of the book does wrap it up nicely, but some students/children may need further explanation so that they do not become upset of scared due to the books content and pictures.

Wanted to smack the younger sister, and shake her 'till her teeth rattled. She needed a Cher to Nick Cage ala "Moonstruck" smack. I wanted to shout "Get over it!" to her several times and could not belive her gaul. Can't say much else or I'll give it away.

The "If All Rochester Read....." selection for 2009. This is a lovely story of a young boy growing up in the Depression era, in a small town in North Carolina. Jim is being raised by his mother and his uncles, and the story reflects the deep love amongst them all. I liked the book for several reasons, including, the notion that cross-cultural issues arise between the closest neighbors, such as the "hill people" and the "town people", and that although divorce may not have been common at that time, but there were still alternative family structures. I guess the story ends up feeling timeless. I look forward to reading this book with grandchildren someday.

It's been a while since I read this book, but I was just bored with it by about the 2/3 mark. In certain ways, I felt it was suffering from the Forest Gump effect: A contrived "life story" that tries to encompass all of modern history.

(I'm not exactly sure if this is the right version - when I read it, it didn't have a "study guide" - but I couldn't find a better ISBN) MAJOR DISCLAIMER - Don't read it until you're ready to read it. It's not going to change your mind about sexual ethics unless you want it to. I initially bought this book (several years ago, used, at a library book sale) to make fun of it. I added it to my collection of "heresy books", along with kooky word-faith stuff and books with funny titles (e.g. "One Woman at a Time") - I had no intention of reading any of these. I read it when I was ready. It's pretty good - he provides context and vision for a newer, more nuanced approach to sexuality (and tangentially, to women in Church leadership). His is a voice from an interesting perspective, as he's not personally vested in the "issue", as a straight, married, monogamous Church leader. It's worth a look.

"the painted veil which those who live call Life" as much as i love the title and this opening quote, this book completely disappointed me. i thought it was badly written, i did not like or connect with the characters, and i really did not feel that any kind of valuable message was communicated. it just got on my nerves, really.
