Brilliant. I am sure many people think the bleak messages in this graphic novel are part of mere entertainment--the violence in the streets and apartments the hypothetical product of dark futuristic fantasy. But as a former resident of the third largest city in America, I can tell you: it's not. Abductions, murders, riots, corruption, death...Watchmen holds up a mirror darkly to the true ugliness of what actually happens everyday, just as the character The Comedian is said to be a grotesque parody of the socity he reflects. It is the world Rorschach yearns to cleanse, Dr. Manhattan longs to leave behind, Ozymandius wishes to metamorphose, and Nite Owl and Laurie seek to simply live in--and perhaps find love in--the best they can. "What happened to the American Dream?" Night Owl asks The Comedian after dispursing a rampaging, fiery riot. "It came true," the latter replies simply, leaving us in the American reading audience to reflect on the cost of our freedoms. This rumination--the main point of the book, if you will--is underscored by an alternate 1980s as society becomes more violent, spinning wildly out of control. Weaving in and out of these decades are the stories of superheroes--some less heroic than others--some government tools, some aging (and replaced) retirees, sometimes needed and sometimes hated by the changing public and media. The book follows a fragemented group of former heroes, each with his or her own frangible personality to be identified with, or detested, depending on our own mental proclivities as watchers. Moore's apocalyptic opinions are often expressed through media ruminations on psychology, the world schemata, newspaper clippings, and ersatz journals from different commentators. Sometimes the flashbacks and delvings become a bit tedious. There are those who may even be dsitracted and annoyed by the comic-within-a-comic, although I personally found it very interesting. Really, my main dislike was with the nature of the villain. Over a decade ago, when the comic was published, he might've been unusual and unexpected--today, however, his type is a villainy cliche, an outright tired stereotype, or even--if you're feeling in a vindictive mood--bordering on plain racism. Are all conquerors not to be admired simply because they were once conquerors? Are we to find no examples in heroism? But Watchmen begs you to wonder upon these points, as some of the heroes feel the ends justify the means, while others maintain their black-and-white values no matter what the cost. Overall, Watchmen presents you with a powerful graphic novel that remains with you long after you close the cover. If you came for lighthearted action, this bittersweet poison powder behind your teeth will not please you. If you came to be mentally arrested, made to contemplate, to fear, to be sad, to wonder and to think--you just might fall in love.
