A great gift from a cool person (thanks!) who was afraid I'd never be able to make a decent oatmeal cookie due to past disasters. I still haven't had the nerve to make them on my own yet.

one of my fav books of all time. I love it, don't get the condensed version... parts don't make sense. Read it all...
It is in no way possible for me to describe this book, except as a surreal semi-autobiography of a family, or maybe as an existential musing of two imaginative people making their way through reality in a slightly askew fashion. The fact that I tore through it in two nights probably is the best thing I can say about it.

A lovely, very touching novel about a man of normal intelligence, Howie, who suffered a brain injury from the war, and was unable to relearn how to talk, and even to read or write. His perspective on life was pretty dismay ( i don't blame him!) until a nine years old son Ryan of his former lover, Sylvia, stayed with him while she was away at rehab. Ryan's presence in Howie's life has impacted Howie deeply, as expected. A couple of things had bothered me about this book - why did not the author bring up the idea of sign language, for he had Howie trying to gesture and being frustrated with communication all throughout the book. From what I read of Howie, lived in his head for a while, and with his capacities and intelligence, he could have learned ASL and be much a happier man. Secondly - I was furious at Sylvia (I won't mention anything further in order not to ruin anyone's pleasure of reading this book) at the end of the book and it left me hanging... I would have liked for the author to resolve that so I could "close" the book with a good feeling than with more questions. Humph! However, the book was lovely written, and I left with a new person in my life - Howie. I swear, he will touch your heart, and STAY with you!!

A follow-up to The Eyre Affair, which you should read if only because how many times do you get to pronounce a writer's name like "Fforde"? (Go ahead, try it.) Plus, the ffirst novel in this series is delightfful in endless ways. This is a pale ffollow-up by comparison, but to be ffair, probably anything would have been. More and more extensive ffootnotes, more plot twists, more (and sometimes cooler) literary-technology gadgets than in the ffirst book ... but they start ffeeling gimmicky, kind of like that extra "f".

Eski moda ama hala İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında ve sırasında Macaristan'daki yaşamın nasıl olacağını (çok idealize edilmiş bir şekilde) görmek ilginç.
