Khaled Hosseini’s The Kite Runner, is a book that I had been eyeing at the bookstore for a while. I never picked it up because I didn’t think that a story about Afghanistan would be interesting, but I was wrong. The Kite Runner is an invigorating story about a Amir, the fortunate son of an affluent merchant named Baba. The book also shares part of Hassan’s life. Hassan is the son of Amir’s fathers servant. The story follows the boys through their childhood years, from playing in their backyard to fighting off bullies. The boys are inseparable, bonding over the fact that neither has a mother. Then one day Amir didn’t help Hassan when he was in trouble, and their friendship died instantly. Soon after, Amir and Baba go to America, because the Russian army invaded Afghanistan. While in America, Amir starts to grow up, and eventually marries the girl of his dreams, and becomes a well-to-do writer. Throughout the book I had to constantly remind myself that this book was fiction and not a memoir, because the characters and story line really did seem real. I think Hosseini did a great job explaining each character individually, and gave enough background information so I could form my own opinions on each individual character. Throughout the book, I could tell whether or not Amir was making a mistake with the way he was treating certain people, forming my own opinions kept the reading from being boring, because I could form my own ideas about different directions the bok could go. I also liked that Hosseini didn’t explain everything in full detail, so the ending and some parts of the book came as a complete surprise. Before Amir finds the truth out about Baba and Hassan’s relationship, he holds a grudge against them. Amir feels as if Baba loves Hassan, if not equally, then more than himself. When Hassan and Ali, Hassan’s dad, decide that it is impossible for them to live with Baba and Amir, Amir realizes that what he has done to make them want to leave is a huge mistake. “Then I saw Baba do something I had never seen him do before: He cried. It scared me a little, seeing a grown man sob....I’ll never forget the way Baba said that, the pain in his plea, the fear” (107). This quote shows that how you see someone your entire life, might not be the way they really are. It shows that some of your accusations might be completely out of line, and that your should ask people questions about their life before they met you before judging them, even if you thought you knew them very well. Khlaed Hosseini’s The Kite Runner is an insightful, meaningful, and inspiring book, but also one that made me search in myself to see if any of Amir’s, the narrator and main character, characteristics were in me. Although there were a few dull parts in this book, I really enjoyed the overall story. The main message of The Kite Runner, was that if you don’t say what you feel, you won’t learn the truth or you won’t get your way. Meaning that in the end all you have is the truth, not the lies you’ve told yourself just so you could make yourself happy and be justified.

One of my "great book" judgement markers is if I think about it when I'm not reading it. I could not stop thinking about and wondering how this book could possibly work out- and I loved every page. I've heard good things about Courtney Milan, and this book really did live up to the hype. She artfully crafted not only the story, but each character as well. She had me emotionally invested in these fictional characters. My heart would break for them, then just as quickly I'd smile... and she put me through a full roller coaster ride of emotion reading this sweet book. It's a simple story really, a man is bent on destroying a family and taking everything from them... and then he meets and falls in love with a woman (the sister of said family, posing as nurse). Well it's not THAT simple as we have a number of brothers to contend with, not to mention how these two can possibly find happily ever after without one of them turning their back on their family... I liked that Margaret (female lead) starts out as a "poor me, I've had my status ripped away" wallflower, and as time goes on she realizes her own strength, as well as comes to appreciate that rank has nothing to do with value as a person or who is worth her time. Almost her complete opposite, is Ash (aka hero of story). A unique character for one of these historical romances - he manages to be strong, smart, and yet also has some insecurities and things that haunt him as well. His relationship with his brothers is definitely a highlight of this book. I was surprised a number of times, though the ultimate outcome is exactly as you'd expect from a romance novel the journey in getting there was quite a treat.
