How this story came to be... One of the scenes of my first novel CheckMate takes place in the club "On The Edge", which I described as a place where humans and vampires meet. On a whim, I also added a throwaway sentence about the owner of the club living with two vampires. Or at least, I thought it was a throwaway line. But it nagged me and bugged me for months until I finally sat down to figure out who was this club owner, and who were the two vampires who shared his life and bed. The characters of Brett and Lisa were the first to take form, and I started writing how they came together, but that just didn't feel right. I meant to tell the story of three lovers. Where was the third, and who was s/he? By looking back further into Lisa's past, I finally found Leo, and figured out how he had reentered her life and become a part of Brett's at the same time. On The Edge shows the first night the three of them spend together... but of course that wasn't enough, and I had to come back to these characters in another book and tell about the morning after.

The prose is Terrific in this book. It's a portrait of a miser, although the title is his daughter's name. Set in france during the early 1800's (in the time it was written), it's amazingly modern in its view of cut-throat capitalism (am I being redundant here?) and materialism's pervading influence on society. It also has some very modern and still very accurate views on small town vs. big city life and mores. Although it's a tragedy I wasn't heartbroken at the end. The characters are all fleshed out, but kept at arm's length. It's more about miserliness and it's far reaching effects.
my favorite book,i enjoy from it

My first Coetzee -- packed the punches as efficiently as short stories do.
Learned a lot but did not particularly enjoy reading this one.

I read it such a long time ago, but I still consider it to be one of the best books ever written.
That's right, it's 3:30 AM, and I decided to come write my Firebird review. Now, that's mostly because Gramma woke me up after I'd been asleep for about an hour and a half, so I'm not tired now, and I'm tired of laying in bed, where I just spent the last hour and a half finishing my book. But don't let me confuse you! Had Firebird been less my speed, I really would have finished the chapter like I planned and gone back to sleep. But it was tewtally my speed; I like when average types kick butt with diligence and wit. I'm not going to spend a lot of time analyzing the writing or plotting, 'cause that'll kind of ruin it for me. Suffice to say that I like talking foxes.
one of the greatest books ive ever spent time on. i like to read books about teenage romances and relationships, and since i play softball i thought, wow this could b a good book for me.... wow was i right. if you have any thoughts about reading this book do yourself a favor and read it.

I like this book. I think it gives a pretty good overview of what bones are, how they work, and has neat illustrations comparing our bones to animal bones.
