This is the English translation of Miyamoto Musashi's Go Rin Sho (pronounced Goh Reen Shoh) (Book of Five Rings). It is a book he wrote for his disciples before he died in 1645. Musashi was one of the greatest strategists of his time and his writings have been used in business worldwide. The title is based on the Buddhist concept of the so-called five elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and my favorite the Void. Musashi wanted to teach his disiples the 'ways of winning'. It was about how to fight duels to the death and win. With that known, it applys to zero-sum games. If you are looking for a dominant strategy for non-zero-sum games, this is not the book for you.

Parts of it I enjoyed but for the most part I could barely stand the book. Took me forever to read because I kept avoiding it but since I read Twilight I felt obligated to read an established vampire-lit cult classic. But bleh. I don't know if I'll be able to pick up another Rice novel again, we'll see. Mostly I think its that I couldn't stand Louis' long winded explanations of everything. Drove me crazy, by the end I was skimming paragraphs. Like I said though there were some interesting parts but they we were few and far between (and the between were Louis explaining why he thinks he felt certain ways about certain things).

My son just gave me this book for my b'day, and my husband is alreay eyeing it. Must be good. Plus it's a "mystery/thriller", so maybe I won't have to think much while I'm reading it!

Admittedly, I didn't have the time to read all of this before it was due. I skipped entire sections (Plays, Poetry), I gave a pass to stories I'd read a thousand times (Grimm's Fairy Tales, _The Book of Three_), and I didn't even start _Jim Bowie and His Famous Knife_. But it's still a fantastic collection, tissue-thin pages and all. Standout novels from the collection that I hadn't read before: _The Phoenix and the Carpet_ : Lovely precursor to "urban fantasy", featuring four children who are actually believable as characters. _Homesick_ : A memoir of a missionary's daughter growing up in China around the time of the National Revolutionary Army's march north. _Bronx Masquerade_ : Fantastic recent novel blending narration and poetry to address image, identity, and the power of language.

Great general lesson/moral but it was set in high school...her second book is way better than her first one...or maybe just written for two different audiences.

This is my favorite book of my favorite author. He dissects every known form of socialism up to the date of publication (1922). His words have stood the test of time and there are very few, if any really new ideas since, that are not actually described (if not by the same names) and torn apart in this book. Most importantly, he explained how socialism is not a rational system and had to fail, of it's own inconsistencies. I cannot praise the book highly enough. The scope is magisterial: covering everything from love and sex under socialism and capitalism, to the details of national economic planning. You will be amazed at how relevant and thoroughly readable this book is today, almost 100 years after it first appeared. Mises's most well known colleague, the Nobel Prize winning economist Friedrich von Hayek, said this book is what turned him against socialism. Before he read it, he was enamored with socialism. The super-popular (in his day) socialist American economist Robert Heilbroner said not long after the collapse of the Soviet Union and most of the communist world in 1989, that "of course Mises was right." That's an incredibly ironic "of course," since Heilbroner made his name pushing various types of socialism during his long academic and best selling author career. The prominent (in Europe) Polish Socialist (1920s-30s) Oscar Lange said socialists should erect a statue to Mises, for his pointing out a critical flaw in socialism. He was NOT being facetious. If even honest socialists such as these admit Mises was right, shouldn't you know what he said about socialism? Another huge benefit to reading this book is that Mises does not contend himself with only being critical of Socialism. No, not at all. He makes the full case for a rigorous liberal society based on a truly free market economy. This book is one of the all-time greatest achievements of the human mind. Considering this, it is also not all that difficult. I thought virtually every part fascinating, and was incredibly enriched by reading every part. Enjoy.

A little bit all over the place but amazing stories by and about Malcolm X. I felt like I really got a sense of how he was such a dynamic person. It brought up the all talk and no action critique which I think has some validity, but did not really address it.
