The Warded Man is primarily about Arlen's rise to power (as well as Leesha's and Rojer's). The Desert Spear is primarily about Jardir's rise to power (as well as Abban's and Inevera's) and the consequences of Jardir taking on the mantel of Deliverer. The Daylight War is primarily about...relationships. The relationship between Arlen and Renna. Between Leesha and Jardir. Leesha and Arlen. Jardir and Inevera. Rojer and Amanavah and Sikvah. etc. etc. But it is also about political and cultural relationships. This book reveals more about what it's like for the greenlanders whose lands are now occupied by the Krasians and their attitudes--both good and bad--toward their conquerors. There is also a deeper explanation of the Krasians' relationship to their own culture, revealed largely through the eyes of Inevera (whose POV we get for the first time) and her backstory (which is not as extensive as the cover might lead one to believe, which is good since we already know much of her story from Jardir), and--more importantly--their changing relationship to their culture. Khaffit and chin can become warriors in their own right. Women gain more and more rights and respect. Under Jardir's rule (and Inevera's and Abban's manipulations/influence), the Krasian culture is becoming more and more balanced. Have they still committed atrocities? Yes. Are they planning to commit more in the name of Sharuk Sun? You betcha. But more and more the reader becomes privy to the potential that the Thesans and the Krasians could come to a mutually beneficial agreement to stand against the demon hordes together and led by not one, but two unifiers (as the demons refer to the potential Deliverers). And of course the Thesans have their own politics to deal with. Cutter's Hollow has become the capital of Hollow County and is "ruled" by Count Thamos, brother of Duke Rheinbeck. The Hollowers returning from Jardir's court (along with a contingent of Krasians) must deal with the new power dynamic and learn if the new Count and the replacement Tender are worthy to be followed. But don't worry. Even though the main theme of the book is relationships, there's still plenty of tension and suspense. (I got squirmy just thinking about how Renna and Leesha were going to deal with each other. Oh snap!) The chapter headers remind us that we are marching ever closer to the New Moon. And remember what happened last New Moon? Oh yeah. Mind and mimic demons. And now the minds are more aware of what the "surface stock" are capable of. Be prepared for the sh*t to hit the fan. Which it does. BTW. Overall I very much enjoyed this book. There is a slower build up to the action, but that's not a criticism. The different pace does take a bit of getting used to though. In general, by biggest frustration with this book is the time I'm going to have to wait for the next book to come out. *le sigh* The problems of being an avid reader.
