I wish the cover looked like this when I read it at 13 years old.

In terms of writing quality, Anchee Min is consistent here with this book’s prequel; Empress Orchid. Min writes with a wonderful ease and flow, combining imaginative description with show over tell. The Last Empress differs from Empress Orchid in construction of plot and pacing however. Whilst Empress Orchid covered a handful of years of the eponymous character’s life, The Last Empress covers several decades. This means the pacing is considerably different. Empress Orchid had the leisure to dwell on choice moments, to draw out key events. The Last Empress aspires to a grander and more epic scope, but it only achieves this half the time. The other half, plot points are summarised and trotted out in after-the-event narrative. I feel a little mean-spirited pointing that out, but it’s true. It’s still well-written, but it feels abridged and abbreviated. The Last Empress is longer than Empress Orchid, so it’s hard to see what Min could have done, other than make this book even longer or make this into a trilogy – either of which I would have been perfectly happy with. The way it’s written as is however, I do feel that the story has lost some immersion and depth due to events being skimmed over, which is a shame as I like these two books, and Min’s writing style. In terms of historical accuracy, I’m still grossly underqualified to comment, but having started reading a biography of Cixi I’ve become aware that Min has changed certain facts in these two books (Orchid was probably not Cixi’s birth name; she didn’t come from Wuhu although her father was an official there at one time; she was originally a concubine of the sixth rank not the fourth rank; Nuharoo was also originally a concubine though she was swiftly promoted to Empress; Cixi’s attempt to get involved in her husband’s rule was greeted with disapproval from him not attraction, etc.) Still a good read however, and in some ways the story in The Last Empress is even more poignant than in Empress Orchid. 8 out of 10.

I loved this book, finished it in less then a week. It's a capturing story and not in my normal reading and that may be why I read it so quickly. Sometimes you just have to get away from what you love to read to read a good book. I have never thought about what Ohio was like in the early times of country I knew this was far north and free territory so it appalled me to read that there was a hotel that plantation owners would bring their negro lovers. I knew it was a detestible thing that happened in the dark but these men were now flaunting the relationship with a slave. My heart goes out to poor Lizzie who is the narrator of the story, you learn how she believes her white master loves her, his kindnesses, and how they build a life but you also see how she looses faith in that love and learns the pain of being a Wench to a white man who just wants children to further his property. This is emotional for any women to have no rights and then be locked into a false life, false love and loss of children. How does one take on so much suffering? Four women who have similliar tales become summer friends and a relationships are born. This is a powerful tale of friendship, slavery, love and freedom.

A good read for the beach. The plot flows nicely, the characters are endearing if a bit monochromatic, and the format is interesting. I did enjoy this book – it was a nice bit of fluff with a happy ending.
An absolutely heartbreaking page turner. Makes you re-examine yourself to make sure you are not one of the people the author encounters over and over again in "Jesus Land."

Never read the Myron Bolitar series but it was entertaining. I might go back and read some more. Very quick read as it has a lot of dialouge.

I really wanted this to be better than it was. The setup is phenomenal; exactly the sort of story I was looking for. A horrific mystery leaving a city in chaos with a select few people understanding what's really going on. I think I was looking for the magic of Relic built from Del Toro's imagination. It tried to be that. But hokily written characters and dialogue, a plot that takes more than half the book to really get going, and an ending that's not an ending at all really ruined it for me. It's decent enough that I finished it, and enjoyed it for what it was, but what it is is essentially set-up. Unfortunately, the story it's setting up isn't as interesting to me. I might catch the second book if I can find it on the cheap.

A whole lot of stats to prove that low-carb works.
