One reviewer actually thinks this author is a modern day Jane Austen? I think not. I was really disappointed by this book. I expected much more after reading all the reviews. A slow read with LOTS of minutia and not much plot advancement. It did pick up somewhat around page 300 (of 355), but even that was short-lived; then it went back to boring!

I loved reading about these women. BUT I want to see this as a historical fiction. As a non-fiction was a bit dull at times. Their story certainly should be told. I would love to see it as a movie. They were amazing women with challenges in life that most of us can not even begin to envision. We need more books about inspiring black women and these women were certainly that. These Hart sisters were articulate and compassionate and undaunted by a world that was shocked by their lives. I would have liked to have been the Hart sisters friends.

About halfway through, I finally decided my interest in the subject wasn't strong enough to wade through all the poetry looking for the science.

This is one of those books, I wanted to keep reading with no interruptions, and find myself thinking about, in relation to my own life, for days afterwards.
This book is actually a 2 and 1/2, I think. I didn't like it as much as the first book...which I think is better developed. The characters in this book seem much more "flat" and the spy plotline is wearing a little thin. I liked the first book because it really explained the spying in-depth--the rooms, instructors, gadgets, and players were pretty thoroughly developed. In this book, though, it seems that too many details are lost. I would've liked to see Zach's character more fully developed, for example. If you read the first one, I am sure that (like me), you'll want to read the next one. However, just be prepared that it might be a little disappointing! I hope that the third one is much better...and I know I'll read it!

Just simply a great book.

Ian McEwan usually comes through with a page turner of one sort or another. The situations are always original ("Saturday," "Atonement") but in "Chesil Beach" I felt the characters were ever so slightly formulaic. That said, the story certainly kept my attention to the end.

Other than the cover, there is nothing original in it. Wait, I take that back.
Spalding's attempt at a novel. Semi-autobiographical. It explores his mother’s suicide and how it tormented him. He ultimately committed suicide himself. Better to read (or watch) Monster in a Box, the performance piece he did in the early 90s (which I saw live in NYC). It’s about his struggle with writing the novel (it’s the monster on the title) and very funny.

One of my all-time favorite John Irving books; to be read immediately after The World According to Garp. This book changed my life.
