It was only so-so the first time I read it. Then I tried reaching Marsh's books in order and realized this one is when Alleyn first meets Troy and that improved it. So did my increased understanding of the art world.
Not bad … but a little weird. The premise was cool, but as it went along it started to get a little random in parts and then really predictable in other parts. It had a lot of plot twists that were verging on dumb, like "Oh guess what?! I'M A WIZARD!" and then somebody else turns around and says "HEY GUESS WHAT!! I'M A WIZARD TOO!!" I'm like, "Okay ... so who ISN'T a wizard?" O.o By the end – which was sorta Hunger Games-esque – I was getting a little bored. Parts were exciting, and the plot was original. But I would have liked to see more character development; I found the main character in particular a little on the dull side. But, over all, it was okay.

The story, case this time was not as exciting as the first book. It was less epic flashback story involved in this case. The case was more down to earth if you could say that about a series like this. What made it work, very enjoyable read was the relationship between Holmes and Dr. Watson none of the many adapatations really do any of them real justice. I liked Watson more in this story, he was more himself, his own thoughts then in the first novel where he was there mostly to be in awe of Sherlock Homles personality, his abilities.

Book eleven in Armstrong’s Otherworld series, you don’t have to read the first ten to understand what’s going on in the story. Savannah was first introduce in Stolen (book 2) at the age of 12, by book eleven, Savannah is twenty-one and is the narrator this time around. Waking the Witch follows the same style that she has shown throughout the Other World Series. It draws you into the story. By the end, she leaves you with wanting more. I really love her writing style. There’s always a little romance in her stories, but not too much and the main story line is really interesting. Everything weaves in and out very well. The book isn’t all that predictable as when Savannah finds something out, you do too, so you’re putting it together with them. Although I did see one of the twists, but not why. The great thing about her characters are that they sound like real people you would meet in real life. I really liked Savannah and I might have really liked her because she’s around my age so it’s easier for me to relate to her then the pervious narrators. None the less, it’s nice to see under her tough girl exterior and understand her a little more. She’s been through a lot growing up through the series and by the end of the novel you see that she hasn’t been completely unaffected or unaware as she acted. I also liked the US cover for the book, the Canadian one isn’t bad either. One of the things I liked about the cover are the letters for 'Waking the Witch.' It’s pretty and eye catching when the lights hits it. Also, I think the cover does a good representation of Savannah. It’s how I would picture her. If you haven’t read the Otherworld series, then you should. Armstrong does a great job in explaining how supernaturals can live among us and for us not to know about it. You can start from the beginning or start with Waking the Witch, but once you finish this novel you’ll want to go back and read the others. Also check out her young adult series, The Darkest Powers.

It gave me feelings of being 12 again. Judy Blume's style remains the same. The book is a 3.5 for me so I was generous and gave it a 4.
