I had to read this book in high school for my senior English class, I've read it several times since, and it remains my absolute favorite book. (This book is the reason I'm determined to name a son Phineas...) I love the characters in this book, and I think it's because I find something to relate to in all of them. I think it should be required reading for all young adults!

"Laughter through tears" is the best way to describe Gogol's writing. Dead Souls was quite a humorous description of mankind. The hero, Tchitchikov, had many failings and some virtues, and his experiences with different landowners brought to life all kind of personalities. I really like the writing style of this book. There wasn't a whole lot of plot, it just revolved around a central character and his series of encounters with Russian landowners. It did drag a little at the end of Part I, but picked up again. In Part II there were a lot of missing pieces of manuscript, which made the story hard to follow. There were also a lot of new characters introduced during that time, causing additional confusion. There was no real resolution at the end, but the book achieved its goal of depicting human nature.

An indispensable resource providing all the original accounts of the sermons of Joseph Smith in the Nauvoo era. Unlike the classic Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith in which lots of the entries were probably not written by Joseph Smith himself, this book provides only reliable sources and without amalgamation. The only problem is that this book keeps going out of print and the price shoots into the hundreds of dollars for a copy until the next printing. Luckily I got one early.

Good book, but it's no "Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay."

This novel was the author's semi-autobiographical work on being in recovery for an eating disorder. It kept my interest, but it wasn't a particularly original take on eating disorders. Two characters were pivotal to the story; an 8 year old suffering from anorexia, as well as a young man, both on the brink of death. This helped to move the stereotype away from teenage girls.

This book actually reads like jazz music. The dialogue, descriptions, structure - everything about it has a feeling of improvised rhythm and melody.

very very enjoyable look at the pivotal changes to the economic and cultural make up of new york in 1977 through the lens of reggie jackson and the yankees and the '77 mayoral race as well as the back drop of the son of sam man hunt and the blackout. fun and informative. and man, fuckin' crazy at times. recommended.

在真正接触本书之前,我已经开始阅读三本书。 它很慢,但是发展成有趣的东西。
