This book just plain old confused me at first. Set in a parallel universe where literature reigns supreme there were so many little things (Churchill dying in his teens, the Crimea War still raging) that I wasnt sure if time travel had changed history or if I was in a world where some things never happened. Anyway,it was still a fun and fantastical read and I really enjoyed Thursday's character and the fact that she gets a happy ending. Not sure if I will read the rest of the series, but this was a nice break.

I don't know that this was meant to be a "fun" book, but I had a lot of fun with it. I also have a lot of fun putting things in alphabetical order, so I guess you'd better beware.

This was required reading in high school. Thus the low rating. See my review of Lord of the Flies.

this very moving memoir feels raw and unfiltered in its presentation of Oates pain following the death of her husband. She is a fine writer, and by the end I had a sense of how a writer's hand had shaped this widow's story. For anyone inclined to simplify what people go through when they lose loved ones, this book is worth reading. What Oates conveys best is the feeling that she simply does not control what is going through her mind. Because the book is so well written the reader can identify with this profoundly uncomfortable state.

For someone who was apparently the smartest boy in his class he doesn't seem very bright sometimes. He's slow at figuring out some things. I also found Kira kinda frustrating. Why does depression have to be so psychotic and loud? I don't think that's the only way and I'm a little uncomfortable with the goth stereotype (heck I've had funny colors of hair, formerly wore a lip ring, & have an industrial in my ear--I've been bitten by too many of the stereotypes) Great narration! But the fact that I lost a cousin to suicide makes me a little leery of any book that touches upon depression. Kira had plenty of reason to be depressed but I don't know, something about flashing the comic book dude didn't ring true to me.

A supernatural/horror novella. Not a genre I read often, but this was a well told story of a small group of people who go for a camping weekend in the middle of nowhere (well, Wisconsin). Unfortunately the many typing errors did detract somewhat from the reading experience.
I gather from the new cover of this book in Waterstones that there is now a television series based on it. So a circle then, because I first heard parts of it on the radio before reading the book. OK. I’m impressed, it’s good -but. Here it is a personal but. I have no idea at all why people of my age have nostalgia for the society of our childhood. Here we have it – gay women terrified of being found out; straight women having messed up abortions because they’re illegal; men being put in prison for being gay; men being put in prison for attempting suicide – can you believe. And in The Night Watch it’s a few years before that and men are in prison for being conscientious objectors. And young men are risking their lives to drop bombs on other human beings. To blow them into pieces. To burn cities. The good old days. The book begins in the post-war year of my birth and works backwards. The tragedy of these people is that their high point was ‘The War’ when there was purpose and everything since is pointless – like older people’s view of modern Britain. This book is demonstrably well researched and each little depressing nuance of 40s English life has a well-sinewed clarity. And the portrayal of London under the bombs is better than anything I have read. As Viv says “We might all be dead tomorrow", so life has point, at least today. Against all this miserable background there are of course Sarah Waters tortured characters’ demonstrating the futility of love and the certainty of betrayal. I didn’t enjoy this book.

First, thank you Goodreads First Reads & Putnam Books for the free advanced copy! (If you don’t already know, check out the Giveaways Section!) Remember THAT ex of yours? Imagine if you both had similar careers writing in somewhat dissimilar genres, and decided to take turns writing chapters (unedited by the other author), included your notes (and footnotes) to each other, and just let it fly. If you CAN’T imagine, then you’ve got the idea. The beauty of the way the story unfolds is that, as both writers work at three tasks (developing murder mysteries, meddling with their co-author, and burying funny insults in shallow graves), NO ONE (from the authors to the characters to the reader) seems to know what’s going to happen next. Miraculously, the result is a page-turner. You’re simultaneously seeing a bizarre story advance and waiting for the next moment in a hilarious (real or staged) spat. On rare occasions, the snarky notes back and forth become too much – but isn’t that the nature of any project with an ex? The funny moments far outweigh the uncomfortable ones and, after all, the back-and-forth gives you the unique (and here unavoidable) opportunity of laughing out loud when a character is unexpectedly killed. The end result is a bizarre, funny, and enjoyable read. I found myself rooting for and against nearly everyone at some point – putting a creative spin on the classic ruse of whodunits. The book is out this month – grab it!
