This book is an abomination and is legitimate grounds to ban author from ever writing another novel. I hope to God this was a ghostwriter and/or verbally gifted monkey, because there is no excuse for it.

If i had wanted a book that follows some person's very boring and emotional life, i would've picked up a biography or a memoire. This book was a complete waste of my time. I don't know about you, but when I pick it a book I don't really wanna hear about how this person is doing absolutely nothing with their life besides attempting to deal with their emotional drama. If i wanted drama I can watch TV or look to my own life. The good news is that Susan Mallery told her readers what was going to happen in the synopsis at the back of the book. So if i were someone who reads the synopsis before i read the book then I could've saved myself from absolute bordem. The ending of the book really bothered me. It wouldn't have taken much to let us know that time had passed since the previous passage. This is something that her editors should've picked up on. A simple change of chapter should've been sufficient, but I guess neither Susan Mallery or her editors were on top of their game when working on this book.

SUCH A POWERFUL ENDING. This would make an amazing movie, if done right. This book was mildly confusing for the first 200 pages (or maybe just for me -- I was confused by all the old foreign guys doing different things), but things get cleared up really quickly toward the later part of the book, and- just- how things all came together, making the conclusion succinct and bittersweet, and, like I said, just really powerful. And the POEM AT THE END. I always admire a good ending, and Nicole Krauss did a stunning job with this. Just one good excerpt: The grass was slippery with mud. In the distance I could see a rowboat tied to the dock. I looked out across the water. Must have been a good swimmer, took after his father, I thought with pride. My own father, who had great respect for nature, had dropped each of us into the river soon after we were born, before our ties to the amphibians, so he claimed, were cut completely. My sister Hanna blamed her lisp on the trauma of this memory. I'd like to think that I would have done it differently. I would have held my son in my hands. I would have told him, Once upon a time you were a fish. A fish? he'd have asked. That's what I'm telling you, a fish. How do you know? Because I was also a fish. You, too? Sure. A long time ago. How long? Long. Anyway, being a fish, you used to know how to swim. I did? Sure. You were a great swimmer. A champion swimmer, you were. You loved the water. Why? What do you mean, why? Why did I love the water? Because it was your life! And as we talked, I would have let him go one finger at a time, until, without his realizing, he'd be floating without me. And then I thought: Perhaps this is what it means to be a father -- to teach your child to live without you. If so, no one was a greater father than I.

Umm really? How has this book become so popular? I am not a fan of it at all. Wow- I feel like I wasted a month of my life.

** spoiler alert ** I won this book . . . I immensely enjoyed this book. I was terrified every night for a week after reading this book. (This is not a book for the faint of heart.) Kilborn does an excellent job at starting the action from the first chapter. I was immediately drawn into the town of Safe Haven and the monsters attacking the town. I thought it was incredibly genius to create super villains that were serial killers in their 'previous lives'. At every turn there is a new twist waiting to reveal itself. I was constantly surprised and frightened by each turn of the page. I look forward to reading more books by Kilborn.

Was offered this book free from the author, but ended up buying it. I thought this was a great story and something we may actually see played out if we continue to let our government grow, unchecked. The only part that really troubled me, kind of a minor criticism, was I thought the author passed up the opportunity to expand the scope of the story by limiting the uprising to just one state, West Virginia. I live in the NW and with the exception of the Portland and Seattle, if Idaho seceded from the Union I could see it having a regional impact possibly pulling in surrounding communities and counties from neighboring states. Sheehan-Miles just seemed too focused on on one state. I also feel that there would be a much bigger rift in the military. This book did open up an additional genre for me. Exploring other authors now, like Rawles and Tappan. Unlike this book, I am finding some of the other books not as well crafted as this. Would like to see more from this author.
