Many of the themes in "Fast Food Nation" return here, particularly in the section on migrant labor: Reading it, you quickly become aware of the corner into which our economy has backed itself. As is the case with the fast-food industry, the low costs we take for granted are only possible at the expense of the workers who produce these products. The section on pot is particularly disturbing as well; among other things, it's yet another reminder of what a disaster mandatory minimum sentencing laws have created in the penal system, and what terribly thought-out political window dressing these laws are. I know you don't want to read it, but really, please do.

Ubik is not my favorite of Dick's books. But this one definitely doesn't disappoint. The paranoia is thick here (not as thick as it was in Lies, Inc.), but enough to really get your head spinning. I think of Dick as a literary version of David Lynch, and I love getting lost in his insane worlds. I think this was the book where I really got how crazy Dick was, and I remember realizing that the entire story line was straight out of a schizophrenic's tangential delusion, but kinda brilliant at the same time. Like most of Dick's books, not for those who like coherent story lines

** spoiler alert ** this book tells the gripping tale of a woman who, one day, decides it would be sporting to fool around with her husband, even going so far as to allow him to handcuff her to the bed an then, just before the sexing begins, decides to deny him access. The husband, righfully angry, then tries to have his way with bound wifey but she busts him in the nads and he conveniently dies. So begins her survival saga of trying to unbind herself from the bed post. At some point a dog tries to eat her husband and a serial killer shows up to model his hand-crafted bone jewelry. If this book still sounds interesting to you at this point...by all means, proceed.

Great book! Keeping with the awesome series!
I've read Gaiman novels before (Anansi Boys) and his graphic novels as well and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed by this collection of short stories. No doubt that Gaiman is an extremely skilled writer and some of the stories were generally entertaining, but on the other end of the spectrum I thought that some of the tales were sorely lacking a point and some of the themes were extremely off-kilter. I like Gaiman just as much as the next Fanboy but if I had my choice I would take his novels, graphic and literary, over the short stories.

Fascinating beliefs and how he came to believe how he does. I didn't agree with everything Miller says and he seems slightly "outside the box" on purpose but it gets one thinking about why they've been inside the box this whole time.
