"Among the Betrayed" is the third book in the Shadow Children book series. Margaret Peterson Haddix fills this book with loads of suspense in every chapter. In this book, Elodie, an illegal third child, is posing as Nina Ida at Harlow School for Girls. She has recently been discovered of being a third child and has been arrested by the Population Police. She is interviewed by the Population Police and tell Nina how she was discovered. It turns out that Jason, Nina's crush who claims to be an illegal third child, too, had turned her in and betrayed her. Nina's time might soon come to an end. But the Population Police has plans for Nina. In order for Nina to save her own skin, she will have to make three other children admit that they are illegals as well. She will have to interrogate them and live with them in their cell. After living with the three children, Alia, Matthias, and Percy, Nina finds it hard to get any information out of them. Alia, the youngest, is sweet, but isn't saying anything. Percy, the smart one, and Matthias, the oldest, aren't spilling anything loose either. Nina stays with Alia, Percy, and Matthias in their cell for a few weeks and becomes friends with them, But with Nina's time running out, will she be able to survive without having to turn in her new friends? Margaret always finds a way to make her books sound as though they could really happen and it teaches readers important ideas. I give Haddix's "Among the Betrayed" 4 stars for all of the twists and turns in the plot line.
