What the hell? Why is this on the list of worst books ever?!?! This book was amazing and obviously some smart ass decided to rate it low. Loser...

Palast is the person who broke the Florida 2000 scandal. This book is quite depressing and a real shock to the system. This book takes a look at several of the major issues facing the country, altough this book was written before the iraq war so some might consider it out of date.
A bit odd, a bit sad but there was something catching.

The language in this, after all of my light reading of late, made this a more challenging read for me. It's an amazing story, but at times I had trouble following it. It's a short book, and I think I made it more difficult to read then it should have been?

I love pulpy crap, especially this 50's idea of what space travel would be combined with a constantly boozing/raygunfighting cowboy astronaut. The artist, Tony Moore, is someone I'm a big fan of. He did the first volume of Walking Dead which I feel is the strongest of the whole run. Fear Agent has a great writer too, he keeps it funny and action packed and doesn't waste the whole first book on exposition. Great cheesy fun. Pick it up.

Karen mentiioned wanting prose that puts its arms around you, well, this prose grabs you and takes you right into Dostoevsky's world. His strength in recreating actual dialogue -- and changing the styles of speaking of different characters -- plays the largest role in absorbing the reader. At least that's it for me. Not that the secriptive language is wanting in any way. It's not. But this is a spoken novel. The Pevear and Volokhonsky translation is especially fine with the dialgogue. Instead of just translating the sense of what each character says, they translate the tone of voice, the verbal idiosycnracies. For instance, when Roghozin, a perpetually dissatisfied, but sadly-in-love-with-the-wrong-girl guy, kvetches to the Prince (who is called the Idiot, but isn't an idiot) "She gave her maid Katya a scarf of mine that, even if she lived in luxury, she never maybe saw the like." I can hear this guy' kvetching when he says that, especially from that misplaced maybe and the emphatic even if she lived in luxury (or how about, "It's a strange riddle for me why she's marrying you" This slightly non-idiomatic English isn't seen elsewhere in the writing. That is, P & V write impeccable English, but kow when not to be impeccable. The dialogue throughout sounds exactly like my Russian speaking family's kvetching, declaiming, arguing, discussing all of the time. Beware. That's what Doestoevsky's Russians do. And the unlikeliest people suddenly start explaining themselves, their thoughts, their motivations, and others listen. So do I. I love it. I'll read it again, I know. Incidentally, Dostoevsky had a big influence on the early 20th century novelists like Joyce and Woolf and you can see why in this novel.

It had a lot of magic in it. The Dementors made Harry Potter faint on the train to Hogwarts.

Dicey's song tells the story of a 13-year-old girl named Dicey who has to start a new live with her 3 younger sibblings, living with their new found grandmother. The book is well written and makes you feel what they have gone through. It really made me sad to read it at some moments but also the story of these four children somehow mastering their lives impressed me. Especially the character of Dicey, who is so mature for her age is incredible. Reading this book made me understand how different and how hard some people's lives were or are but how they can still love and enjoy their lives.
Aggression needs an outlet... and you're too blond!
