An interesting concept. That thirteen women could purchase a diamond necklace, share it equally between them without fighting or greed, and allow it to become the binding agent for the group that goes on to become a force bigger than the members. That this expensive item could be the thing that creates unity, a sense of community and allows the women to appreciate the good in their lives and want to spread that around to those less fortunate. Good read.

Didn't want the series to end. Surprisingly happy with how it ended.
Anything of Haldeman's is going to shine through. This look at relationships and relativity is no exception.

i leaned pretty heavily on this book while reading an excerpt from the writing of julia kristeva. pretty fascinating study, though. language. and where it comes from.

Hated it. Railed against it. Wrote scathing papers about it. Really, really dislike this book. And I can't remember the specifics of my loathing, but I know that I'll never go back to read it just to find out.

My favorite from the series... It tends to go downhill from here :-/
Read it before Farenheit 911 came out. Was really funny and I am sure a lot of what he talks about is true, but I would never use it as my sole source.

Such a heartfelt trip that even though you know you're going to be put through the wringer reading it, you just have to because it deserves it. You can't help but feel like you're a part of this family and that their loss is personally affecting you as well. Gayle wrote her characters beautifully and you felt like you knew each one of them by the specific memories Mia recalled while in the hospital. I loved Adam so much and I know many girls out there would love to have a guy like that by their side through a tragedy. The part of the story that got to me the most had to be the conversation between Mia and her grandfather at the hospital. What an incredible scene and written so delicately. Anyone who has ever experienced a loss can relate to how that played out. This book is about unimaginable loss and what it really takes to come out on the other side, knowing that you lost most of yourself as well. Mia courageously attempts to pick up the remaining pieces of her life, even though she's not confident there are any left. I'm sure you'll be hoping she finds the strength to stay, even if that is the hardest decision of all.

I thought this book was very average. Ms. Leroy did a good job of providing conflict within the character, Vivienne, a love affair with a German soldier within the context of war and occupation. However, I didn't feel the terror that must have affected the townspeople, their feelings of desperate helplessness. I liked how Ms. Leroy wove her descriptions of the island, the garden flowers and fruit into the storyline. Upon finishing the book, I felt that I would have liked it better if she had provided more character detail and had more sense of suspension and suspense in the plot.
