A story about storytelling... a Southern black woman journeys through life seeking love. Issues of race (and governmental discrimination) and gender pervade this novel. Hurston is a master of this binary narrative: some written in "Standard English" and some in "Black Vernacular" (or "Black English) - which is a style of writing that fellow Harlen Renaissance writers Wright, Hughes, and Ellison did not experiment with all that much. Takes careful reading, but worth it.

Amazing book. I could stay with these characters forever. Love all the side romances and love the action! Just a great read start to finish.

Liv Tyler must be a saint! I enjoyed this book, but the more I read the more I was in awe of lovely Liv Tyler. Bebe Buell comes acoss as basically a nice person, but incredibly silly, shallow, scatterbrained, disorganized, needy, child-like . . . basically all the things you don't want in a mother! How Liv Tyler could grow up to be a great actress, successful model, sensible businesswoman, and a devoted single mother, is really one of the great triumphs of the human spirit. Liv honey, we're all waiting to read YOUR book -- that should really be something!

Not for the faint-hearted. I really enjoyed this gruesome and funny mob story. I'm also a sucker for interesting footnotes. I'll happily keep an eye out for this author's next novel.

I read this book alongside Harold Bloom's famous work on the Bard and actually enjoyed it much more. The books are organized in much the same way, tackling each play one-by-one, chapter by chapter. When reading them side by side, I was more convinced and intrigued by Garber's readings; I think her interpretive strategies are more like my own than say Mr. Bloom's - so I am probably biased. In fact, I know I am biased; Bloom is a meglamaniac. Garber does a good job making use of more recent schools of interpretation (namely post-60s textual, feminist, and historicist forms of critique) while resisting the tendency of exploiting Shakespearean texts for political/pedagogical purposes that go beyond the texts-themselves. She respects the universality of Shakepeare's art while also grounding the complexity of Shakespeare's literature in the networks of socio-historical forces and influences. This book is a great reference and a great read.

Very moving story. Some of the parts were hard to read because of the subject matter. The ending was a bit too contrived, but the book was well worth reading.
after my bf spending months nagging at me to read this trilogy, i was blown away by it. canavan's writing style is absolutely outstanding. she's descriptive, yet frank in the meantime. her characters are real, despite being a fantasy series. anyone who loves fantasy or even just general fiction will enjoy this trilogy.
