Easy reading. Not very exciting throughout, hopefully the next installment picks up the pace.

I'm still working on this one too, since I'm in school. But I'm near the end and have some time this weekend... It's an attempt at giving figure to death and the German is very difficult, but it's a good way to connect to those I know through this existential novel; however, it's good Rilke continued writing poetry and this novel does not compare.

Good book, thought provoking.
A fabulous accounting of the academic life, with all the personal dramas, petty professional squabbles, and psychotic colleagues--especially true in economics departments.

Wow. This book is a mind-fuck. And that epilogue about the Hillickers? That completely shocked me, how the author would say those things about his life. Wow.
1973 Caldecott Medal Winner Ink and watercolor again, I think. Kind of cool--the watercolor doesn't completely stay in the lines, and what's going on above ground is done in black and white whereas the underground events are in color. I'm definitely not a fan of the 70's colors, though... mostly greens, browns, and orange. Blech. It's kind of a lame story... an old Japanese woman in a kimono who constantly laughs "Tee-he-he-he" gets kidnapped by some oni (demons), then escapes with their magic rice-creating paddle. She then becomes an entrepreneur.

A morality tale. In my edition (Broadview Press) there is a very informative introduction, mainly regarding the social climate and the status of women that prevailed at the time of writing (1886). In the guise of an interestingly complex plot, the author , in a Dickensian manner, explores the unfair treatment of women under Victorian marital laws. All the characters come off rather well in the end if you are prepared to allow that humans are essentially flawed. The main actors display maddening but ultimately (in the author's eyes) forgivable frailties. At least one character, Bennydeck, is exaggeratedly saintly and is the author's representation of the ideal. If you like Dickens, you will probably like "The Evil Genius".
Was initially irritated by the prose - one sentence paragraphs piss me off, and still don't feel that the gimmicky narrator adds much. However, persevered due to fondness for the characters and was ultimately glad that I did. Quite charming in many places. Would recommend.
