When I was in high-school, I used to steal this book from the library every few months and then secretly return it. I was embarassed to check it out, not so much because the protaganist is a sexual messiah, but because it is written in a magical realism style. I was a snob; I knew I should know better, but I still loved this book...so entertaining.

What a compelling story. I had never read about or even considered slavery in the Revolutionary War period. I learned a lot about the horrors that people lived through. I can't imagine being stolen from my family and all of the sudden not being free anymore. And then losing my own children and husband. The main character is a survivor and I had a hard time putting down the book.

of stephenson's books, this was the lightest, most boring... it's a stephenson book, on a college campus... not horrible, just not as cool as his others, a little predictable in spots.

What starts out as an interesting premise and setting quickly turns into a predictable, sour story where the characters don't change and act like complete idiots. I found myself despising the main character for being such an absolute moron and bungling every situation. The motivations are unclear for most characters and the predictable plot moves so quickly that it doesn't even take advantage of the whimsical setting available. This book has no idea what it wants to be - is it a romance? Is it suspense? There's little of both and the ending is so dull and uninspired that I actually threw the book across the room. Dreck.

I did like this book. Actually, through about the first half of it, I could not put it down. Then, in the middle of the book, a few things happened that were just depressing. And it never got any brighter. It was very interesting though about how the choices we make can really affect our lives and everyone around us. In this book, the father thought he was making the right choice to protect his wife, however it proved to be the destruction of his family.

I nearly put this book down after the introduction - Winchester uses 5 words when 1 will suffice and fills his text with conceits. However, once past the intro, this turned into an interesting study of the causes, experiences and after-effects of the 1906 earthquake.
