The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers is a novel about communication and belonging. It takes place in Georgia before the onset of World War II. Tensions between blacks and whites thread the novel, along with greater tensions as Hitler consolidates power overseas. The focus of the novel is a character named, Singer, who is deaf and mute. Singer has a deep friendship with another man who is also deaf and mute, Spiros Antonapoulos. During the years of their friendship, the two passed largely unnoticed in the town. It's when Antonapoulos is sent to an asylum that Singer begins to change. He paces the town at all hours. He takes all of his meals at the New York Cafe. Through a change in behavior he is now accessible to the townspeople, even though he cannot speak nor hear. The perspective of the novel widens to include four characters, all of whom project themselves onto Singer. Each of the four characters meet with Singer on a weekly basis and empty themselves of thoughts and emotions. They talk and talk, but never engage with Singer. Singer becomes a receptacle for them and while they believe their friendship is deep, Singer finds it puzzling, because he does not understand them as intimately as they think. Another layer to this theme is that Singer has a similar relationship with Antonapoulos, who clearly suffers from some cognitive impairment. Is Singer's relationship with Antonapoulos any different from the other four character's relationship with Singer? How can Singer be blind to this possibility? Ultimately, how well does the reader know Singer? Even though the novel is about him, it's rarely from his perspective. Just like the other characters, the reader projects onto Singer and establishes a relationship that is largely one-sided. Carson McCullers explores what it means to be isolated through physical impairment, race, family, poverty, and political beliefs. It's an interesting technique and one that largely works. Among the four characters who are friends with Singer, none of them are able to identify with the other. They are all outcast or isolated in someway, yet are unable to find solace in one another.

When I'd heard that Matched was being compared to the Twilight trilogy, I had to check it out for myself. The first thing I noticed, was that Condie is a much better writer, technically, than Stephanie Meyer. She is artistic, creative (this story is dystopian), and as a past Englih teacher, has impeccable grammar! However, I was not hooked as quickly in Matched as I was in Twilight. The plot built a bit more slowly, but very solidly. Condie's novel was more concise, which worked well with the futuristic setting of the story. But she did a masterful job at building the romance of Cassia, the main character, and Ky Markham, her love interest, and has set the stage for a great sequel. I definitely recommend this story to my nieces (ages 13-18), and anticipate more good reading from Ally Condie.

This is the fifth book in Sookie Stackhouse series. We are introduced to a couple of new characters in this installment. I do find it interesting that Sookie has gone through most of her life with no love interests and now she has more than I can count! (Although I miss the Eric from the last book). The books are starting become pretty patternish, but I guess thats what happens when you read a series. The books are enjoyable though, and I look forward to starting the next one in the series, Definitely Dead.

haven't been good at reading "often" lately (summers in AK!!!) but so far this book has been wonderful and speaks directly to me ;-) (updated note 01.30.2010) finding it hard to pick this up when there are so many other good fiction books out there I'd rather think about :-) this is still on the list - good writing - easy to read and understand

Mapson is an author I turn to like comfort food when I get tired of rich fare. Her chaaracters are real people with flaws, ones you can love and appreciate. In Solomon's Oak, Glory is a grieving widow whose's part-time job at Target might provide just enough money to get by--if she didn't take in strays. Glory and her husband of ten years had fostered teenaged boys, whome they loved and sent on their way better prepared for life. She also fosters dogs, that she loves and trains for a permanent home. Why not? The dogs don't eat as much as her horses, they have space to run, and they help take Glory's mind off her loss. Glory's already short of time, money, and energy, when she agrees to foster a teenage girl--a troubled vulnerable girl who lies--but Glory won't say no. She starts a wedding business to help with the bills; she can cook and organize but she's no good with a camera. Luckily for all involved, Joseph, an amateur photographer, is visiting from Albuquerque to take ictures of California trees, one of which, the Solomon oak is on Glory's property. But Joseph is also an injured cop, slowly recuperating, and planning to leave soon. Is he the man for Glory or is Joseph another stray? Maspson has an excellent back list too; all are recommended for readers who want a well-written, intelligent, cointemporary romance and friendship story.

Lisa See is a favorite author of mine, so it was with great anticipation that I cracked open this book. Disappointment met me in the 2nd chapter and wouldn't leave my side. I appreciated the history lesson, but the character Joy was not believable for that time period.

The story gets a little intense in the beggining of the book, what almost made me don't proceed with the reading. Fortunatelly I decided to insist and actually Mischa started to develop a relationship with Tom and the book got delicious to read. Loved it !

Combination of hard-to-understand kind of plot (since it's basically just letters that are crumpled together) and a weird story. I didn't enjoy reading it, I needed to go back through so many pages to get back to specific letters because I felt like missing some information while reading the other further letter. There are so many names kept coming up and disappearing. I thought watching the movie would help, but it didn't for me. The movie was way more strange.
