I zipped through this one on my flight back from Reykjavik. The premise (dragons in the Napoleonic Wars) is interesting and the story is immediately engaging. Both the human and dragon characters are endearing and well-developed. The battle scenes are detailed, but not tediously so. In short, really solid work by Naomi Novik. Definitely checking out the rest of this series.

If this author knew me and my family I'd swear this was about us. Julia is this little boy. I am his Mom. I've even done the same exact falling bit she does when she's carrying the load of clothes in her arms and I'm fairly positive my face looked like hers also although I hate to admit it. (I do want to note that there is no man looking like the husband she had on the previous page. I can do without that thank you. And before I forget, I'm pretty sure my butt and thighs don't look like hers. Thank God above.) (Oh. And I have the same slippers too. That I wear about 97% of the time.) :-D Okay, enough of the rambling. I have to agree with another reviewer who mentioned the illustrations being a little on the freaky side. The reviewer mentioned the eyelashes looking like stitches and I didn't notice that so I went back to look. Yeah, they sure do. Now I'm trying to figure out if that's what made me so freaked out or what. The one page where you can practically see the kids spleen is the stuff nightmares are made of. I'm so glad I have a girl. Anyway, back to the story. I like Shannon, Julia and I both like his stories. And this one hits home for us for sure. Julia has far too many toys and we've gone through this exact story more than a half a dozen times. I try to pick out what she doesn't want anymore, she loses her mind because she can't part with it. This, that, this broken thing, that thing missing six pieces, no matter what it is it has some special, unseverable connection to my kid. I'm slightly surprised this is the first book like this that I've come across. It's a fantastic idea for a story really. I don't know that I can think of a better author to pull it off either. The ending is a nice addition. Julia really liked everything about the book and I need to get his others so we can read through those.
YES. That is all.

I got this book on Monday and I am on page 300 already. Once again a series that you just can't put down. I am on the late show with Eragon and crew but better late than never. The sister's are being represented in full effect with Princess Nasuada. More to come....
Comprehensive and elegantly written.

Let me preface this by saying that I love historical fiction having anything to do with Europe between the years 1900-1945. World War Two dramas are usually filled with such drama and atmosphere that I can't help but be excited by it. I'm not sure why, but I love it. This book found me while I was on my French Resistance kick, and it's about a squad of British Female Spies that parachute into occupied France to aid in the Resistance. Sure, it's a mass-market paperback thriller, but it's a fun, fast-paced read and I love the authenticity of detail, from the description of the spy mindset while being followed, to the images of "ersatz coffee" that was used while regular coffee was being rationed. Ersatz coffee, by the way, was usually ground and roasted chicory. Not terribly tasty. What intrigues me most about this book is what shocked me about the movie Charlotte Gray. Women are usually depicted as nurses and faithful homebodies during WWII. The fact that many women risked their lives and actually parachuted into France blows my mind. Most male soldiers didn't even parachute, let alone into occupied enemy territory.
You follow the mid-wife, Mary Sutter, as she tries to reach her dream of being a doctor and performing surgery. To get to her dream, she leaves her family and follows the civil war. The gruesome scences of medical science being learned from first hand aduring the cvil war are fairly accurate to history. Despite hardships, Mary finds that the greatest hardship is being away from her family and the three men who love her in very different wasys. An excellent read for historical fiction.

Fun. Like the tragedies more.
Alec and Jamie Kincaid's book. I loved this book with all my heart. I was grinning the entire time I read this book. In fact, my cheeks hurt. Not that it was laugh out loud funny, but I loved the conversations and the banter between Alec and Jamie so much. I think the main reason I loved this book so much is that there wasn't this huge conflict from the beginning of the book that took the entire time to solve and then they were married, expecting a baby and The End. I am so sick of that as the staple for romance. Instead, I got to experience Alec and Jamie marrying for duty (even though there was an attraction) and the rest of the book was them adjusting to their married life. Alec was Scot and Jamie was English. Since Jamie moved with Alec to the Highlands, it was truly enjoyable reading all about her trying to settle. I just adored them as a couple. I liked them both so much. There was no whiny stupid miscommunications or dramatic immature plot line. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what they were going to do next. Huge recommended read for any of my friends who have not yet read it.
