One of my favorite James Rollins books. A departure for him because this is actually the first in a series with re-occuring characters which he has never done before. This book introduces Sigma Force- a name which would normally turn me from this book before I even cracked the cover- but I gave it a chance and loved it.

I heart SLP! Seriously, what a great read. Each chapter is told from the point of view of one of the characters, so it reads almost like extended prose monologues that flow in beauty and simplicity the way that Parks's writing usually does. Yet the subject - how much are we fated to act out our lives (and isn't this the stuff of all great literature) is played out uniquely, through the discussion of Beede blood and Beede luck contrasted through the admissions of guilts - most tiny, some large - we as readers are privy to in the interior moments of the mind each chapter includes. It seems that many of us want to believe in the larger narrative of fate, and yet if we were to really look at our thoughts and actions, we might have to acknowledge that fate is of our own construction.

This book is in a category of its own - both extremely disturbing and compelling all at once. If someone handed me The Road, The Border Trilogy, and Child of God without McCarthy's name on them I would have thought, due to subject matter and setting, they were written by three different but equally brilliant authors.

Interesting, but I found the whole premise hard to take and the general pace to be slow.

Sequel to So Far From the Bamboo Grove. No such thing as happily ever after, eh? Wonderful, though. Postwar Japan for those without much room to maneuver. A good look at the underclass, the Burakumin.

What? Huh? Yeesh, what happened? Infinity got the best of me...this time. If this book taught me anything it is that Infinity is bigger than me. In fact, it made brain shrivel a little. When it comes to math, I'll admit, I'm a bit of a slouch. When it came to reading this book, I'll also admit I was a bit of a slouch. Interesting, to say the least, this whole Infinity thing. But, at the end of the day, I like my like my liquor neat and my coca-cola warm and my numbers finite.

It literally took me 3 years to finish this book. I've started and stopped it countless times. I finally pushed through and finished it. I think the book had a great story to be told - very clever and inventive. Its downfall is that it drags on so much - I found myself quickly losing interest in the wordy descriptions. The last quarter of the book was the best part by far, and even though I didn't love the book, I would probably try another book by the author.
