I don't know why so many of the reviews/recommendations I've read for this book compare the hero, Flavia de Luce, to Lisbeth Sanders. I guess it's because they're both not your typical female mystery protagonist. The comparison doesn't seem fair -- I know which one I'd like my sons to marry (seriously, if she has a granddaughter...). On the other hand, I know which one I'd like walking home with my daughter after dark, too. Anyway, I need to get back on task, this, by gum, was a fun read with an utterly charming hero that deserves all the accolades and awards it's getting. Our 11-year-old hero (no, this is not a kid's book [not that there's anything inappropriate for anyone who's made it through Rowling here]) is a budding, self-taught, chemist with a curious mind and a stubborn streak a mile wide. Her family life is a mess -- but in a charming, amusing, English countryside way -- but our plucky gal has managed to get through it pretty much intact and for the better. So when she discovers a body on her lawn, yet the police shoo her away from the crime scene and dismiss her, she starts her own investigation. She's helped early on by a fact or two the police didn't obtain from her, and some that she kept to herself out of spite. Her father's arrest for the murder just adds fuel to her fire and becomes determined not only to solve the case before the police but to make them eat a good-sized helping of crow. Probably not much of a spoiler to say that's exactly what she does, because the book's not about that foregone conclusion, but in watching Flavia do that while making less than flattering observations about her older sisters. Highly recommended.

This book is a gumbo - full of tons of ingredients and flavors. I happen to prefer soups (and books) with a more simple seasoning. If you like your novels to be fairly fast paced and with chunks of various genres, then I can recommend Truly, Madly. While it was certainly a good little book, I felt there was too much going on, as if the author was trying to write a book that would appeal to everyone whether they liked romance, chick lit, or cozy mysteries, or something else altogether. That is a commendable goal, but I would have preferred more concentration on the main points, even if that caused the book to go slower. The characters, though the abundance of them could cause confusion at times, were a redeeming factor overall. Lucy, the main character, is a sweet girl whose best talent is simply helping people, and I felt that she is just coming to realize that in this novel. She is able to put her "power" to good use, and the side story about missing little boy Max was my favorite part. Her attraction to Sean is intense, but the constantly looming cloud of "Cupid's Curse" was a tad bit annoying and unsatisfying, although I understand the author couldn't exactly have them running off to the chapel at the end of the book. Then what could we look forward to in the sequel?

Either my tastes have changed, or Maeve Binchy has changed - I have not enjoyed her last two books nearly as much as I did her earlier writings. I found the plot of Heart and Soul to be contrived, predictable, and very simplistic. Talk about "...and they ALL lived happily ever after!!" Even being an optimist and liking happy endings, this was not close to reality. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, this book did not have the "flavor" of Ireland, as most of her previous books; I missed that.

1942 Caldecott Medal Winner This is the best of the older Caldecott books, imo. Brown pencil illustrations give us a detailed vision of the ducks and their surroundings both urban and natural, with the humans looking slightly more cartoonish (as they undoubtedly look to a duck!) Adorable story about a Mama and Daddy duck settling in Boston to raise a family. Daddy flies away for a little while and agrees to meet the Mama duck and their eight babies later in the Public Garden. In order to get there, though, they must pass through human territory under the helpful guardianship of several police officers.

I think this story touched me more than anything I have ever read. Sarah's story, her despair was overwhelming. I had to get through it just so I could be finished with holding it in my hands. I am glad to have read it, to be better able to imagine the horror of this time period. And yet, my reactions, my feelings can never approach those who survived these atrocities.

This was a beautiful and suspenseful book. I think it was one of the first books that I actually reread. I'm not a big re-reader, so a book has to be great for me to do that. The mystery in the book was well crafted.
