I tried to read this immediately after I finished The Handmaid's Tale and I had to put it aside because it was so different. I'm glad that I tried again. It was a little hard to get into at first because of the story-within-the story format, but it is definitely worth continuing. By the end I couldn't put it down.

This is a lovely story about a boy who comes from a dysfunctional family on the wrong side of the tracks--the mother has died, the father works all the time, and his siblings are on the verge of juvenile delinquency. When he is befriended by a fellow classmate, who encourages his to raise chickens for a science project--hence, the title--he becomes more confident and less passive about his future. Good for middle school kids--I'm using it in a book discussion group for 7th and 8th grade kids this summer.

Honestly, while it's often touted as the/a Great American Novel, I found it to be little more than an informative and in-depth look at 19th century whaling techniques. With a little something about Ahab tacked on at the end. But man, what great info on whaling!

I have a copy of Angel in the Corner, but Kate and Emma sounds like it might be one of her better books. The best known is apparently the first one, about working as a servant. She seems to be classified as 'light' but I shuld wait and form my own opinion!
