The war in southern Sudan that Deng (the narrator: he told his story to Eggers, who wrote the book as a fictionalized memoir) is a survivor of lasted for more than twenty years, from 1983 on. Trapped between two forces, the civilians, Deng included, had no place to turn. To me, one of the most affecting parts of the story was that some people wanted to believe that the government was there to protect them even after it became clear to most that they were on their own. Those who did try to flee to Khartoum were killed or enslaved. Although Deng's sympathies lay with the SPLA, they were little, if any, better about protecting civilians, and were brutal to soldiers and deserters. Eggers' interweaving of past and present in the narrative could easily seem ham-fisted, but in this case it worked for me. He is clearly trying to keep the story relevant to the present, so the reader won't think, "Oh, well, good thing that war is over and Valentino made it out okay."

I've just reread this one, and I have to say, it still gets 5 stars. It's harder and sadder and meaner than I remembered, but it's also better and more beautiful, too. And the relief I felt at the end! When Franny takes off her slippers and falls asleep in the bed-- it's just SUCH a release and a relief and the sadness is still there but it's better, too. Yes. This is 5 stars for me.

I miss Molly. This book was enlightening about our civil rights and how easily some of us are willing to give them up. The legal cases cited are excellent examples. As one defendent said "I thought the USA was a free speech zone."

I'm beginning to like Joe Hill quite a bit. I grabbed the first 4 volumes of this series at library yesterday and I'm already on volume 3. The idea is unique and the mythology of the word that's starting to surface is interesting. I'm hoping the library has the rest of the volumes that are out unless I've gotten as many as I can for now.

2.5-3 stars. This was my first book by Kat Martin. Hmmm...just can't really put my finger on it. It was ok..didn't rock my worl but grabbed me enough for me to finish it. It dragged..didn't really pick up til the end..and that was pretty brief. Loved Jackson...and I think that's what kept me reading this book. Had a lot of potential but it just went on and on. I did like the intro to Dev and Gabe...and will most likely read their books because I'm hoping/thinking this is my '1st book syndrome' in a series?!?!
Written in 1953, this mystery takes place mostly in the Dorsetshire Hotel in Kenmore Square, several blocks from my house. It's an apartment building now. There are a couple murders, a kidnapping and a lot of money laundering. Much of the action takes place in the Arnold Arbotetum as well. The lingo and the atmosphere made the book for me, the ripping good plot was incidental. Dames saying, "say! What is this?" are alright by me. Also the turnpike wasn't there and they go into buildings that were torn down to make way for it. There's a Kenmore Cafeteria, bestill my beating heart! Etc, etc. Wonderful if you miss old Boston from before gentrification. My mother's Boston.

I really really liked this. I was a member of the story from page 1. I cried & laughed & held my breath. I will fight for the rights of all black maids working for rich white families! oh wait...
