This is the sort of book I use to demonstrate how interesting and intelligent YA lit can be.

It was an okay read. I didn't love the characters. The sense of humor I loved about the Gallagher Girls series is missing in this book. Everything was serious and whiney. Katarina doesn't seem to enjoy any parts of her life. She has great friends and caring family, in a way, so I was saddened she wasn't more content. Maybe it was just overload of teen angst. My husband liked the book more than I did. It ended fairly well. There was nothing objectionable. Good for junior high girls. I still wish Carter would go back to the Gallagher Girls series.

Slight, but amusingly unpredictable. Sort of similar to the types of stories certain geeky little kids write, only not nearly as good.

Meticulously researched and brilliantly and engagingly presented. This book covers many facets of split second decision making through various case studies and research findings. Each chapter has held my interest and at times read like a novel ("what happens next?") so the author definitely did a great job of presenting scientific research for the layman. Both good and bad types of split second decision making was presented combined with practical ways to train our subconscious to exert at least some control over this mysterious mechanism of ours.

This was a new era for me to read about...late 1930's in New York. Refreshing, intelligent and well-written. I did struggle a bit with the occasional foul language, but it was appropriate for the characters usling it. Other reviews complained about the verbose descriptions throughout the book, but I completely enjoyed the word pictures the author used. I will have to revisit this book in the future.

I read this book many years ago when it was first published but I remember loving it. I enjoyed reading about Julia and her family. It’s a great coming of age story about a 12 year old girl and the upheavals going on in her life. I could really put myself in her place. The characters of Julia and others in the book are developed beautifully and I remember envying Julia’s life, despite some of the challenges she faced. A great read!

Nora behaves just like an insecure teenage girl in real life. Kudos for nailing it.

This has been on the TBR pile for a little while and I fancied a fantasy so I decided to give it a read. I'd be hard pushed to set down the plot in a few words but it tells of two half brothers, Anaxantis and Ehandar, who are sent by their king father on what seems like a fools errand to protect the Northern borders of the country. Anaxantis is weak and sickly and his brother takes full advantage of that. However, after brutal treatment by Ehander, Anaxantis vows revenge and is determined to turn the tables. There are some very difficult themes in this book, incest for a start - although there's hints that they may not be true brothers - and a pretty horrible rape scene. However, as these events are needed for the story to progress, and also because incest doesn't bother me anyway, I could see why they were included. The book is thick with rich plotting, fully rounded characters, devious plotting and politics, and a hero who I both liked and disliked - he truly was a mix of anti-hero and true hero, and one of the best parts of the book was the conflicted personality of Anaxantis. My only niggle was the excessive head-hopping which jarred me out of the narrative. However, that seemed to be the style that the author was aiming for with an omniscient narrator and so I went with it after a while. The book is first of a trilogy and as such ends on a cliff hanger. I rushed off to buy the sequel and I'm looking forward to that.

I might even have liked this second book better than the previous book! Forman has a great writing style and some beautiful characters. She made me care for her characters and their worlds. It definitely felt like a whole new reading experience.(reading "If I stay" and "Where she went" Thank-you, Gayle Forman, for these exhilarating books.
