If you described it to me, I'd say this wasn't my type of story. But it totally won me over with sharp writing and gorgeous art. Very European.

Admittedly, I first picked up this book because I'm a Burmese American. While this is clearly the most accessible history of Burma, I think what I liked about it the most was that it was a history of a mid- to small- sized multicultural power sitting between larger forces (China, India, Britain, Japan). While there are quite a few books on the big powers and how they interact, this book is fascinating in that it looks not only at how smaller powers navigate, but also how small events in large powers can have significant implications for the countries around them. Also, given that Burma is a natural crossroads, bringing in people from all across Asia and a few other places, it was quite interesting to see the interactions between people of different cultures and how Burma has been trying to deal with the fact that it has always been a multi-ethnic nation. I know some Burmese will challenge Thant Myint-U for his more conciliatory stance towards working with the Burmese government, but this is a strong book with much to teach people about not only Burma, but about how smaller countries work and how multi-ethnic communities work (and don't work) in other countries.
Reminiscent of Hunger Games or Uglies in pace, setting, etc. I found the struggle btn. selflessness and bravery interesting. The references to bile and vision impairment were overdone in my opinion - I think there were better ways to emphasize pain and fear.

Death in Venice is a philosophical examination of the plight of the artist. Aschenbach--the fallen artist--has lost his soul in his pursuir of success. He goes on vacation, where he falls in love with Tadzio, a young boy. As cholera overtakes Venice, Aschenbach slips deeper and deeper into his love affair. This novella is a really masterful combination of action and philosophy, seemlessly interwoven through Aschenbach's character.

Read it and love it. It is so harrowing that at the end I has wished that it would have been a happy ending (i.e they found Kate), but! I just have to be happy with what McEwan thought was the best ending!
Love this author -- am currently in an on-going love affair with her novels. Her main characters, running through all the books I've read, are a Scotland Yard officer and his former sergeant, now transferred to the Notting Hill station. Very good character development in all her books with characters we care about.

There were a couple of funny parts but mostly this was a retread of the last 16 Stephanie Plum novels. Too much of a good thing.

I absolutely loved this book. It sucked me into a completely different world and time and place with every page. There are two stories running concurrently throughout the book - Shevek's journey to the original home planet and his own upbringing and what led to his decision to make his journey. The way the stories are written is beautiful and they lead to their conclusion perfectly. I loved how neither world was really deemed as a perfect world. Just like our world with all our different cultures and countries all are flawed and all have good qualities to them as well. This book neither condemns nor condones either anarchy or capitalism. It studies both and presents them in a unique and exciting way. I recommend this book to science fiction lovers and those who are just looking for a different kind of story.
