P.D. James has said this is the last Adam Dalgliesh mystery. Like all those before it, this is well-plotted, and while there are hints throughout about the final outcome, there are also surprises up until the very end. The characters are complicated and interesting, but what I enjoyed most was the collection of clues, gradually building up more and more pieces of the puzzle to fit together until things finally came to a dramatic and disturbing conclusion.

Besides the interesting POV for a narrative I wasn't incredibly impressed. I finished with a feeling a kin to- and sooo? I'm starting to understand why some books are classics, and some aren't.

I was looking forward to reading this but was pretty disappointed. The author has obviously spent a lot of time researching the facts. Unfortunately she spends most of her time repeating every bit of information she found instead of constructing a compelling narrative.

Not one of Penny Vincenzi's best, at least not in my view. I started out really enjoying it but got too bogged down in too many characters and realised that I was far more interested in some of them than others. So I ended up 'skip reading' to see what happened to the most interesting people. I might give it another go sometime but probably not soon. I wish I could claim to have enjoyed this book more because the research behind it is, as best as I can make out, spot on. I was one of the people who barely heard of the LLoyds scandal and one of those who assumed that it's effect was that a few rich greedy people just ended up a little bit less rich......clearly that was far from the truth so in that respect I'm glad I read this book.
Beautiful, eloquent, sad...the prose in this book is elegant and amazing (unlike my own).

This one was my favorite, so far. It is the only one that has made me want the next book. I love how the author brings in new characters, but they don't overshadow the ones that are already there. I'll keep reading these as long as Butler and Foaly are in them (I do like Juliet too)!! This one did have me stop and ask Nathaniel if it was worth my time to continue. ;-) And it was.

It’s over. It was sad, as I expected, but it could have been worse. One of the fascinations of reading the Boudica series is that Scott will bring events right up to the point where you think it can’t get any worse and she is going to have to pull away except she doesn’t and the worst does happen. Of course, heroic things happen. It couldn’t be a book about iron-age warriors without heroism. But somehow, even when they do it is still sad. Oh, maybe I’m just sad the series is over. I will say that Scott seemed to get a little lazy with this last book. The use of language and imagery that spun a spell in the first books seems a little tired by this fourth book. Ah, but I would read a fifth, if one appeared.
Covers the history of Babalon from her beginnings in Sumer up to the current times. He gives his twist on events in history and how it applies to Babalon and shows how her presence has persisted despite the best attempts to wipe her out. Key characters in this book are John Dee, Aleister Crowley and Jack Parson, as well as the authors own self. Definitely worth the read, I only wish there was more practical information covered in addition to the history and musings. But perhaps the next book .....

Unlike the baseball version of 'The Code', this book only deals with the football code in a few chapters. Other chapters deal with football issues, but not with the unwritten rules that is supposed to be the foundation of the book. It also contains the same annoying sidebars that make continuity difficult. And the editing was just piss poor. There were so many grammatical errors that I had a very hard time understanding if the good was actually read through. If it was, the person responsible needs to find a new line of work. All criticism aside, the stories and anecdotes in the book are fun, and worth reading reading. You just have to get past everything else.

Terrific read. The last few pages describing a Brooklyn dog park are so perfect. The only reason I didn't race through this book is that my new full time job which does not allow me to use mass transit is seriously cutting into my reading time.
