"It's odd, he thought...how sharing a sense of doubt can bring men together perhaps even more than sharing a faith. The believer will fight another believer over a shade of difference; the doubter fights only with himself" (p. 52). "'Time will show.' 'Time will never show. Our lives are too short'" (p. 109). "I believe what I told her, he told himself as he went to find the Mayor, I believe it of course, but how is it that when I speak of belief, I become aware always of a shadow, the shadow of disbelief haunting my belief?" (p. 172). "'The professor seems to regard all that as nonsense.' 'So does the bishop, which inclines me to think it is true'" (p. 213).

Thought it was a riot despite myself. Resisted reading it for years because of my fatigue with the eternal romanticism associated with the Appalachian Trail. Don't get me wrong, I love the Appalachians like any good New England girl should, but I'm over the AT craze. Nonetheless, Bryson is a downright funny, insightful and enthralling writer.

Surprisingly modern for a classic.

a realistic view of the spiritual evolution of a persons journey through life. Sidney Poitier speaks in a way that pulls you in and makes you want to keep reading. The is a lot of names dropping of people who were famous befor my time and it sometimes made it hard to follow his comparisons and discriptions.

fun, but seemed awfully like the Lord of the Rings.

This book helped me better understand the Palestinian situation and how Arabs in general think. The author admits that Muslims are so stubborn that it takes a Saul-of-Tarsus-type vision to convert a Muslim to Christianity. Tass is born in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia 3 months after his family is driven from their home in Palestine. From there he bounced from Saudia Arabia to Syria to Jordan to Qatar as a terrorist for Arafat's Fatah organization. Only Jesus could save Tass from destruction.
Aside from identifying somewhat with the author's sense of loss, it was very comforting to read about the depth of his despair. By that, I mean I appreciate that even such well-respected authors as C.S. Lewis experience life changing phases; fortunately they put words to paper and let the rest of us share in them. There is much joy in this book, too, when he relates his love for his dying wife.
Finally, a book with a kick-ass heroine who is strong without being obnoxious. Kate is intelligent, hard but not brittle. While she is a loner, she has very good reasons for her isolation. The worldbuilding in this book is absolutely unique -- the magic is returning to the world in waves of increasing power and duration. The resulting mess and social instability has a post-apocalyptic feel, but without the hopelessness of a true dystopia. This is a book I reread several times since buying it a year ago. Despite the short length, it's meaty enough to withstand several rereads and that, for me, is a true sign of quality.

Roy is one of the best writers I have encountered. Her style is wry, ironic, personal and, given her content, absolutely devastating. This book is controversial due to the perspective she sheds on how people in "left behind" countries viewed 9/11, but with an open mind a lot can be gained from it. I'd also recommend "The Cost of Living," which details the effects of globalization in india-that description can't even begin to do justice to how fascinating and breathtakingly powerful it is. A must read for any global citizen.
