** spoiler alert ** This book started out so good, it almost took my breath away. I liked the way Ms. de Rosnay alternated between Sarah's narrative in 1942 and Julia's narrative in 2002, even using different fonts for the two narratives. But after Sarah's narratives ended, the story became pretty schmaltzy. I knew Julia wouldn't go through with the abortion, no matter what her husband wanted; that part didn't bother me so much. But her single-minded obsession with finding Sarah went overboard. She went as far as going to America to hunt Sarah down, and then when she finally got there and found out she was dead, she found out where her adult son was living (Italy) and flew all the way there to tell him what she'd found out about his mother. He was understandably upset, having his world pulled out from under him like that, and told her to never contact him again. But then later he comes around and hunts Julia down? Come on, give me a break. Also, the way Eduoard and Mamè act about the whole thing, with Mamè privately telling Zoë the family's terrible secret behind Julia's back before she dies and Eduoard rallying around Julia and telling her everything himself - it just left me shaking my head. The whole ending was too much "happy ever after" for me, even though Julia and Bertrand divorce. And then there's the baby. As soon as Julia started referring to the baby as "the baby" instead of saying a name, I knew she named her Sarah. And sure enough, she did. I had read really mixed reviews about this book, basically saying it started out good but ended up kind of the way I described it. I should have listened to the reviews and stayed away, but I'm so interested in World War II that I decided to bite the bullet and read it anyway. I really wish I hadn't, the last half ruined the first half for me.

Quite peculiar but so fresh. Imagine finding a trove of old photos and not knowing anything about the photographer, subjects, dates, circumstances, etc. Then make up a story to fit the pictures. This is such a clever and creative book. I loved it and would suggest for any adult as well as a person as young as middle school age. This is Ransom Riggs first novel and hope not the last. Great reading that will stay with me for a long time.....................

Swanson seamlessly weaves the intertwined search for Jeff Davis and the public mourning of Lincoln in his second book. Well worth the read for no other reason than its thoughtful depiction of Jeff Davis as equally devoted to his political beliefs as Lincoln was.

I read this book while flying to London. It was a perfect way to think about London in a different way. I wanted to travel and see the same type of sites. And while I am an art history buff I enjoyed this while giving it a critical eye. I know the things they craete are just that... but it is nice to make a mystery where non exists.

Lovely and sweet--beautiful pictures, perfect for both fairly young readers and "older girls" without the heart to grow up. Could not find a single thing not to like...except, there are far too many bugs. Aphids, spiders, wasps. I swear, I thought I was back in my very first Summer Reading program trying to explain to my pre-Ks why all insects are part of the life cycle and therefore significant...blah, blah, blah, when really they are all disgusting, soul-less non-creatures whose only purpose is to skeeve me out and/or bite me.

An enchanting story, full of beautiful simplicity and the type of circular storytelling that I loved as a child. The Caldecott-winning, scratchboard art illustrations are what really won me over, though. They are exquisite, intricate, unique and breathtaking! Amazing how such "dark" illustrations can radiate warmth and light--you'll feel the bright yellows glow right into your heart!

I did like this book, but have come to the conclusion that I enjoy historical fiction more than historical romance:)

WOW !!! I expected this book to be very depressing but what a surprise. The author took this little book and filled it with HUGE lessons we can all learn from. He gives us all a reminder as to what's important in life and it's sad and funny and thought provoking all at once. I highly recommend this book.
