I don't know if I needed more pessimism. But maybe the perspective that "some are not fixable" is necessary. It scared me, the work that shows that those who are sociopaths at age 11 show no signs of recovery. It scared me, the potential that some poeople have for sustainable evil. People should have to apply to be parents.

Just to clarify, my two stars shouldn't reflect badly on the book itself. It was very well written as a children's book. It is definitely deserving of the Newberry Honor Award. I gave the two stars because it didn't really hold my interest. Possibly because the last books I read were The Hunger Games & possibly because I am too old...who knows. One thing I do know is that I would've LOVED this book when I was younger.

I am such a sucker for her books. I really liked this one, it was a page turner for me and I read it in about 48 hrs. It is a little real and deep just like all her books. This is only the second one I have read and I could tell what the plot twist would be but I really liked it. I never thought about the mother of the accused. It was so powerful to read the story through Lacy's eyes.

** spoiler alert ** What a great ride this was! After feeling that New Moon was a tad sluggish and moved a bit slow, Eclipse was a rollercoaster ride from start to finish. I found myself continually frustrated with Jacob (I am firmly on Team Edward *wink*) and his refusal to step aside gracefully even after Bella made her feelings known. She'd made her choice and yet he continued his pursuit... and not always playing fair. The last 50 pages or so (from the tent scenes to the final showdown on the field with the Volturi) had me breathless. The suspsense was wonderfully torturous. Loved the ending, love the series, and am both hesitant and excited to start the final installment. I'll be sad to see this series end.

Sometimes there's a comfort in seeing familiar tropes done well, which is how I feel about this series. Nothing groundbreaking here: evil wizards, impetuous apprentices in magic, brave princesses, telepathic bonds with dragons. However, all the characters are well-realized in a way that takes them beyond their types and makes them feel real. I _hate_ the new covers though--this one isn't so bad, but the new cover of Dragons of Trelian, where Meg is partially hiding behind Calen and peeking out from behind his shoulder--SO MUCH UGH NO. Meg would never do that!

The first half of this book kind made me want to jump off the nearest bridge - not really an uplifting kind of story. But the second half is the "redemption" section and is a good example of people dealing with what life hands them and moving on. If you like books told by different characters (each chapter is narrated by one of the main characters), then this might be worth trying. Otherwise, skip it.
