More of a "guy book", especially guys interested in fast cars. Since I am not a guy, nor am I interested in racing cars it just wasn't my thing.

It's pretty engaging and no, I haven't seen the movie. Ok, I'm done reading this, and I have to say it kinda let me down at the end. The build up was good, but the insanity of the reasoning behind the plot was a bit overboard and the lack of closure was just disappointing.
I was really impressed with the things Anderson has done and seen, especially at such a young age. His story is not told in a linear fashion, but, rather he covers the stories of tragedy and loss he has reported on, such as Iraq, a famine in Niger, and Katrina, and relates them to his own personal losses. The book is very personal and moving. He reflects on how people respond to dire circumstances and how they go on after losing everything. May cause tears, so beware of reading it in public ;)

I really didn't care for the extremely self-conscious tone of the book - especially the intro and appendix. Full disclosure: I gave up on the appendix.

I enjoyed this book a lot. Natalie MacLean's style of writing and wine descriptions appeal to me. She describes things as I would, which makes it easy to understand and to pick wines I think I would enjoy. Plus she is a hoot! Interested in wine? Pick up this book and subscribe to her newsletter today - or this weekend :)
umm, zimbardo of the stanford prison experiment fame? why do i not own this NOW?

I think these Shadow books started running together.. they could have been one more condensed book, I think.

At age 12, Johnny's twin sister disappeared, shortly thereafter his father leaves. Johnny and his mother have survived the last year each in their own way -- Johnny has been systematically searching for his sister's kidnapper and his mother has descended into alcohol and drugs and sought consolation from a rich, abusive man. Factor in Johnny's best friend who is dealing with problems of his own, the cop who seems obsessed with the girl's disappearance and Johnny and his mother, and a couple of mysterious deaths and you have one incredibly suspenseful story and a well-crafted mystery. I've now read three of John Hart's books and have loved every one of them. He is a master at creating characters that evoke strong attachment and empathy. Johnny and Hunt (the cop) are realistic in their reactions and are both admirable in their tenacity. Johnny's mother is difficult to like, but understandable in her grief. The plot is believable and kept me on my toes with new revelations at every turn. Just when you think you have it figured out, POW! Something incredible is revealed. I finished this one in a weekend and had to force myself to put it down to go to sleep. I can't wait to read his latest, except what will I read after that???
