This book FREAKED ME OUT in the beginning. I was really scared,I had to see several episodes of South Park to stop looking in the dark corners of my room. :D Was anyone thinking about Supernatural while reading this book? I was. It contains many of the same elements, and in many ways Cas is not unlike the Winchester brothers. He's funny and driven and talented and a damn fine person! The secondary characters in this book:Thomas,Caramel,Will and Morfran are well developed characters. I love their quirks. I love their flaws. I love their fullness. The plot worked until the focus shifted away from Anna about two-thirds through, which is a shame. You may think I am insane for saying this but the romance with Cas and Anna did nothing for me. Kendare should let them hook up in the second book and not in the first. I loose interest very fast that way. That is the only reason I give it 4 stars. This was the best ghost story that has been written in years. It is the ghost story readers have been looking for but haven't been able to find. Creepy, scary, and will keep you up all night turning the pages! All in all, I am fascinated by Kendare's writing ability and I look forward to continuing this series. I can't wait to see what happens to Cas and Anna next!
"If you want to understand the differences between Anasazi, Mogollon, Hohokam, Sinagua and Salado, you get a very brief primer here. Otherwise the book is an interesting reference and catalog of many individual sites and regions containing sites ascribed to the aforementioned groups. I read this book early on in my studies and the distinctions were lost on me. A second read will probably warrant a higher rating. LOTS of pictures in this book which is very nice."
I loved this book! Fun, Funny, Clever!!

While I am not sure that any pharmaceutical company in todays market would send researchers into the jungle with limitless funding but no results, Patchett does her usuall good job with suspending disbelief in slightly unreal situations. I heard her interviewed on NPR and she did actually go to the amazon and have the experience of a huge snake being wrestled into her boat, so some of the scenes are from actual experience. The characters evolve throughout the story, and I felt my sympathies for their predicaments and disgust for their failings and selfishness changing as the plot progressed. And in typical Patchett fashion, you need to pay close attention to the dialog, particularly in the rapid plot twist at the end.

I received a copy of this book from my mother-in-law. She, in turn had received her copy as the member of a reading group, and she felt, not surprisingly, that it was much more my thing than hers. The book is a history of the French Revolution, told with good humour and affection by a notorious 'leftist' comedian. The book strips away some of the stuff that you might have thought you knew about the French Revolution, which was probably the product of a 'rightist' education system, leaving a story which highlights what was so good about the intentions of the revolution while not shying away from those things that might be considered to have been its failures.

This book can be summed up in one word: pretentious. and as others have said before it's pretty gimmicky with the flip page of a shark, diagrams, etc. You probably won't be into the book enough to even care or take the time to want to comprehend what it is the author is going on about. very much "meh."
This is literally, the worst book I have ever read, and hear me out. It is the worst book that I have ever read, finished, and didn't like. Some books I set down after the first chapter, some don't make it that far. It does have redeeming qualities, like it is well written, the characters are brutally real, the situation is believable, but when it was all said and done, what the heck was the point? The dog went rabid, killed a few people, then a little boy dies of heat stroke.IT was kind of a let down. Everyone needed to die an make it miserable, or everyone needed to live (secondary characters excluded) and happy endings all around. If there was a point, I missed it.
Loved it! Made me laugh out loud and also proved to be quite comforting. For how silly it appears to be, it's actually quite smart. Check it out!

So far so good! Although it would SUCK to be him, he's got plenty of hilarious stories that accompany his illness.:)
