Weird. I reviewed this but it shows up as the wrong author... i can't be bothered to re-review it but I really liked it. Not sure why it is on goodreads twice, once with the wrong author - I guess maybe I reviewed the screenplay? Anyway. It's great

One long poem, which I keep rereading. He treats the case of a homeless man, with a dignity and questioning not surprising for Tom Waits, knowing his songwriting. SOme of his questions could as easily be applied to anyone, like the implications of this statement, "My parents were good people/ Shirley and Raymond/They prayed for a child/Just like me" Powerful work.

This was my second attempt at reading this book. The first time, about 12 years ago, I thought it was very clumsy, long, and boring. I enjoyed it more the second time, I think mostly because my knowledge of the historical era it is set in has grown, but also because it has more story and less steamy parts. That is a way my reading tastes have changed in the last decade. Overall, however, this is your average romance story. Misunderstandings abound, heroine is feisty, hero is a rogue who must be tamed, heroine is kidnapped and must be rescued by the hero, heroine is poor, hero is rich, etc. The clothing, activities and settings of the medieval era are well researched and well depicted in the story, so that is encouraging. Both villains made me want to puke, which I suppose means they were accurately portrayed. I guess I was just left with an overall 'ho-hum' feeling after reading this book. Wasn't great, didn't suck.

Another tale that is a lot like the others. The thing I liked about this is that Sunny's utterings are getting more recognizable as words. Sometimes, Snicket quite cleverly uses French and Spanish words with some relation to 'what Sunny means by this.' At this point, I am just reading because I'd like to know the secret of V.F.D. and what happens in The End.

Moses takes on the religion and the philosophers of his day and today finding concordance with religion and science.Moses uses the old testament or Torah/Tanach for his arguments. Showing his strengths admitting his weakness and that of others. More than worth a second or third reading.

David Benner explores what it means to pray "Father... not as I will, but as you will." I particularly enjoyed his distinction between willfulness vs. willingness, in the beginning; and some of the methods of paying attention to feelings as they provide clues to a person's spirit interacting with God's Spirit. But more than anything else, he encouraged people to pray the prayer of Jesus, actually to pray it, and to trust God to aid in the surrender of the will to God's will. For that encouragement I am grateful.
