Amusing and articulate rant at some easy targets. A little too self-deprecating at times and not clear what the goal of the book is, except to let off steam at the absurdities of organised religion. Still, worth a listen to the audiobook where it comes over more like the stand up routine it originally was.

nice read. talks about a woman's journey to her inner self. she writes about how the world sees her and how she sees herself. she takes her view of herself internally, finally, whereas she was defining herself through other's views.

I was pretty discouraged at the prospect of peace in the Middle East before I read Friedman's book. “From Beirut to Jerusalem” was published in April 1989; I finished it last Sunday (June 07, 2009) went down to have breakfast, turned on the television show THIS WEEK with George Stephanopoulos and the discussion was on the occupied territories in Israel. As I ate my breakfast the issues being discussed WERE EXACTLY THE SAME AS THEY WERE IN 1989! Needless to say now I am even more discouraged than I was before for the peace process.

MIDNIGHT IN DEATH is the first of two ‘In Death’ series novelettes that I read over the weekend, both were quick and easy reading, and both were very good. The story jumps right into the action as Eve Dallas is called to investigate a body that has been dumped in Times Square just after Christmas. The victim is Judge Wainger and he had been brutally tortured before being killed. Attached to the body is a note with a list of who the murderer is going to kill. Eve’s name is last on the list. All the names on the list were involved in sending psychopath killer, Dave Palmer, to prison three years earlier. He liked to capture people then slowly torture them to death in order to find out just how much the human mind could endure. A quick check confirms that Palmer has indeed escaped and the intended victims warned; but the race to find him has begun. Palmer is already going methodically through his list and the body count starts to mount. Just because Eve knows who she is looking for doesn’t make the hunt any easier, and the action lasts right up to the last page. MIDNIGHT IN DEATH first appeared as a short story in an anthology titled "Silent Night," but has now been reprinted in its own right. Despite the short length I found it to be a well written and pacey story.

***a couple of spoilers appear in my rant*** This book read better than the first ("The Magicians") in that it actually had a theme and a followable story. I actually found myself enjoying a great deal of it, up until the ending. Lev, WTF were you thinking!? What kind of phone-it-in crap are you pulling here? Geesh! Poppy: Oh no, I can't possibly stay! I have my work on dragons that I *must* get back to. Josh: I've got a palace in Venice, more money than I can ever spend... Why would I want to walk away from that? ONE JARRING BREAK FROM STORY FLOW DURING THIS STORY'S DEATH RATTLE ***AND TOTALLY OUT OF LEFT FIELD WITH ABSOLUTELY NO SETUP*** Dude, we're not going with you back to Earth! We're going to stay and be Queen/King; we just couldn't say no. WHO THE #$&% ASKED YOU!!! I mean really, no one asked anybody crap! Just all of a sudden we're watching Quentin being given the bum's rush and, when he's consoling himself that at least he'll be able to have two of his friends to be with, they act like they've been planning all along to stay. I very much wanted to throw this POS across the room after reading that. It felt like the gist was "We didn't want to stay here and just be your guests or anything, but since your job's vacant... see ya sucker!" And WTF's up with the "gate keeper" chick? You've kicked the collective cans of everyone that's gotten in your way through the whole book, but one bossy chick and a dude in a tux start acting all uppity and bossing you around and you just take it and roll over? It makes no sense. None whatsoever. As a side note, I did mention that I enjoyed a great deal of this book (and I did). I especially was getting into the parallel back story of Julia. I enjoyed that MUCH more than the rest of the story--especially ANYTHING dealing with that whining prick Quentin. All-in-all, I bought this book in the hopes that it would be better than the first; it was (IMO). However, I've gotten a good feel on Mr. Grossman's writing style now and WILL NEVER buy another of his books. If he were to write another book in this series, I *might* check it out from the library. I won't, however, take any part in monetarily encouraging this author to write again.

Heartbreaking and poignant, the letters between Marina Tsvetaeva, Rainer Maria Rilke and Boris Pasternak show the strength of the written word in extraordinarily difficult times; Tsvetaeva in exile in France, Pasternak squeaking by in Moscow, and Rilke slowly dying in the Swiss countryside. Their emotive and passionate letters show the evolution of their poetic ideas that would remain with Tsvetaeva and Pasternak for the entirety of their lives. Without this creative collaboration between the three (neither Tsvetaeva nor Pasternak would ever meet Rilke in adulthood), the salient poems from this time would not exist. Tsvetaeva and Rilke's ruminations on the purpose of the poet is particularly moving. Timely, and beautiful.

Combo Mười Tội Ác (Bộ 5 Tập) Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

I picked this for the book club I am hosting this month. My ratings typically go something like this: 5 is outstanding, out of this world; 4 is really, really, really good; 3 is kind of good and solid; 2 is just okay; 1 is pretty bad. Ideally, I'd give this a 2.5 if I could. In some ways, it was a 3--good and solid and an interesting concept that will evoke lively discussion at this month's book club. I was continually distracted, however, by just how much gratuitous sex, drug use, and a sense of overall crassness there was in the book, which brings my rating down. I don't know if it was the book's fault or the way it was marketed ("someone else slaps someone else's child at a suburban barbecue...", but the suburbanites in the book were far from any I know. Maybe I'm prudish, but was it really necessary that pretty much every single person was screwing around on their spouse and snorting lines of cocaine at the family BBQ. Really? And the constant use of a particular "C" word--is this an Australian/British thing or what? It almost seemed like the author overused it in the same way that a six-year-old overuses the word "fart" in order to get a reaction from his peers. Anyway, it was a solid book on its face, but got bogged down in what I mentioned above...
