Pleasant, if you are in the mood for the historical English A.Trollop. The first in a series. The warden is not of a jail. He is taking care of a dozen guys in a rest home run by the church. You have well intentioned people who mess up each others' lives being more devoted to their causes than each other.

This became more than a book to me. So, I cannot review it like a book. Set aside this particular individual, from whom nothing should be subtracted. His scenario, and who knows what other scenarios, have been endured many times over. Often, by those who were never able to describe them to anyone. I was reminded by this servant one more time about the abyss between those who would make so-called "rules of engagement" and those who have the duty. That reality surfaces in many aspects of life--probably moreso in a society where much is taken for granted. Also appreciated the kindness and real selflessness of people--across cultures--who would try to help another human being, even at some personal loss or the risk of their own safety. I don't know anyone, self included, who would have gotten where they are without the unthanked help of many people, who helped, often selflessly, just so. May I just say, so inadequately, Thank You to our soldiers and their families.

I loved the beginning of this story, the fun way the main characters meet, their instant attraction and we were off to a flying start. Then I don't know what happened, the writing lost some of it's zest and it was somewhat confusing. Secondary characters that could have added so much depth to the story were just left to flounder. Towards the end it got back on track and then...it just ended without too much fanfare. Just flat...blah. I had such high hopes for this book and while it was a cute story, it wasn't great.

I'm not sure if it counts as a "read" since this was an audio book, but I've been borrowing audio books from the library lately to get me through monotonous times. This book was short, only three CDs, and I listened to it in its entirety on a 6-hour road trip. The language is precise and telling, told through different perspectives, mostly children, and I think serves well as a family-friendly tale. I'd highly recommend it on your next road trip. The story focuses on the Japanese internment during World War II, what it meant to be displaced from home and family, what it meant to be American, or Japanese. There is beauty in the details. There is quiet strength. I've always been fascinated by this era, by the inequity of it, but it still holds true to any gorup that's been exiled in their own country.

Don't think I would like to work for them. Don't like the way they treated Jerry Saunders and AMD. Creepy and very corporate, even if they were responsible for Moore's Law.
