“I turned around, stepped over the zebra and threw myself overboard.” This sentence, full of surprise and wonder, jumps out of the middle of Life of Pi. It's indicative of the story Yann Martel tells in this novel, a remarkable story where he makes the unbelievable sound credible. When you stumble across sentences like that, you know you're in the hands of a master storyteller. Yann Martel gives us the story of Piscine Molitor Patel, self-christened as Pi. Yann Martel keeps the story of Pi's long voyage moving at an interesting pace. You know from the beginning that Pi will survive, but at times you wonder how he will overcome each challenge he faces. Martel doesn't allow Richard Parker to be anything more than a dangerous Bengal tiger and Pi never to be more than a desperate boy lost at sea. As Pi's long days at sea take a toll on his health and mind, the story begins to strain credulity. Martel then challenges the reader at the end to disbelieve it all. In the end, it becomes a matter of faith.

what is the world was all the hoopla about? I enjoyed this brisk adventure, but it certainly didn't shake my religous foundation. I thought it was pleasantly paced and well written. I was disappointed to read Brown's prior book Angels and Demons, because I felt he had just changed the European cities and identities of the secret orders and written the same book.

Agatha Christie truly is an artist with mystery. I genuinely enjoyed not only the story but her writing style. The way the plot unfolded was captivating and interesting. I definitely will be reading more Christie...

I read this book for a project on C.S.Lewis's writing (comparing the way Lewis gives religion to children and adults). This book is a hard read (it is from the point of view of a demon trying to cultivate souls for hell). This book is well written and an interesting look at christianity.
Never really got into the story. It was good, no complaints, but it never really hooked me in.

Arthur Conan Doyle- The Hound of the Baskervilles (Penguin Classics 2009) 3.75 Stars Sherlock Holmes and Watson are hunting down a ruthless villain. The villain is using a large menacing dog to haunt and murder the rich Baskervilles. Leading into perilous places, they must unravel this mystery before it takes down the man they are supposed to be protecting. A challenging case for the brightest of minds. This book is a classic that everyone should read, or at least everyone should read a book from this series. It is a challenging read, as it is very different from today’s author’s styles. However I enjoyed the challenge and found it to be captivating watching Sherlock’s mind work. At times it is certainly a little slow moving, but you are kept on your toes guessing what is going on. I do feel bad for Watson that he must put up with the abuse of Holmes, but he does have the option of leaving. The setting is interesting as it enhances the mysteriousness of the situation; I would be curious to check out the places mentioned in this novel. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good mystery. This delightful collection of three short stories is a must-read for the holiday season. Each story is a different twist on a familiar holiday movie. You’ll delight in the modern-day version of An American Carol by Jasmine Cresswell, Miracle on Bannock Street by Colleen Collins and It’s a Wonderful Night by Kathleen Long. An American Carol: Charles Brentwood has allowed himself to become the bitter old miser we so often see portrayed in The Christmas Carol. What’s different about this character is that he really is related to Charles Dickens, the writer of the original story. In the process of self-discovery, he realizes his mistakes of the past and allows Christmas to work its transforming power. Miracle on Bannock Street: Take one ambitious female private investigator, a court-appointed attorney, a wayward 11-year-old, a very confused Santa and you’ve got a miracle on Bannock Street. Stella is saddled with Bobby, who’s been in and out of the system and is about to get sent to a school of boys but it’s the holidays and the judge doesn’t want to send him there now. Turn around being fair play, Victor gets Santa to stay at his house. Taking a leap, blindly trusting, this group forms a magical Christmas tie. This was my favorite of the anthology because the little boy’s Christmas wish comes true. It’s a Wonderful Night: Meredith Downey had never planned to stay in Dodge, New Jersey. She’d left right after high school to become a doctor never to return again, leaving behind Matt Riley. That was, until her father died and left the town without a doctor. Her sister, Melody, is the one that left and traveled the world. But one wonderful, snowy night, Meredith and Matt got their wish and realized that things sometimes may not be what they seem. If you love to watch those black-and-white movies every year, then pop the corn, make a hot chocolate, take a front row seat and enjoy this book of holiday romances.

Alec and Jamie Kincaid's book. I loved this book with all my heart. I was grinning the entire time I read this book. In fact, my cheeks hurt. Not that it was laugh out loud funny, but I loved the conversations and the banter between Alec and Jamie so much. I think the main reason I loved this book so much is that there wasn't this huge conflict from the beginning of the book that took the entire time to solve and then they were married, expecting a baby and The End. I am so sick of that as the staple for romance. Instead, I got to experience Alec and Jamie marrying for duty (even though there was an attraction) and the rest of the book was them adjusting to their married life. Alec was Scot and Jamie was English. Since Jamie moved with Alec to the Highlands, it was truly enjoyable reading all about her trying to settle. I just adored them as a couple. I liked them both so much. There was no whiny stupid miscommunications or dramatic immature plot line. I couldn't wait to turn the page to see what they were going to do next. Huge recommended read for any of my friends who have not yet read it.
The quintessential Dickens, in my opinion. It's a long read, but engrossing in every way--especially character development.
