I'm still not sure why this a YA book, but it is one of my top ten all time favorites. Everyone should read this book more than once. I just finished this again for the fourth or fifth time. I've lost count. Great literature reveals something enlightening with each reading. I could not love this book more. I led a couple of discussions at the library for 9th graders going into Honors English. This was the summer reading assignment. We have some interesting and interested kids in our little community. We had some lively discussions. Love, Love, Loved it!

Very cute (in a good way) book. I confess to a fascination with Britain's royalty, but I wouldn't have known about this book if I hadn't received it as a gift. It's a pretty quick read, with some laugh-out-loud moments. To be honest, I didn't figure out what was going on until the same time the heroine did (which is actually early for me - I usually don't get it until AFTER the author has explained everything!) While I think it may have some "too modern" moments, I recommend it for a Guilty Pleasure List. (And on a side note, if you haven't seen the PBS special "David Suchet on the Orient Express", , I recommend it HIGHLY. And you can watch it online!)

The main character's, Scobie, unwavering duty to his drab and flaky wife set him up to eventually become the pathetic victim of his own misguided priorities. Scobie somehow allows himself to "indulge" in the passions of a secular love affair with a down-trodden refugee innocent in the absence of his unfaithful wife only to ultimately be betrayed by his mistress. The Heart of the Matter is an interesting variation in the conflict between the safety of acceptable society and the attraction of the illicit. Instead of the protagonist overcoming the dull life of a social marionnette by indulging in the passion of the illicit, Scobie finds himself alone after having been betrayed by the female objects of both of these competing worlds -- woe is Scobie, as it turns out.
This is a great book for anyone embarking on a personal journey that may push the limits in the eyes of many. Inspirational.

What a great way for closure after leaving a terrible job...write a satirical novel, allow it to percolate a while, and then start naming names! I enjoyed this tale of corporate contempt in an overly-identifying way and not so much as a story that expanded my horizons. Interesting look at Corporate America as seen through the eyes of a Sci Fi writer and former Hewlitt Packard employee. Identifying with my own corporate career, I found this book scathing, poignant and hilarious. I can't wait to talk about this book with my book group! Although I can wait to go back to work and see how dead on some of Barry's insights were. I'm now interested to read Barry's earlier work Jennifer Government.
Why did it take me so long to read this?! I cannot believe that I kept passing up on opportunities to read this amazing book. So, you may be asking, why did I? Well, it was the summary. I am not sure why, but it never really *caught* me. Despite the gorgeous cover, I just was not drawn in. I finally decided to break down and read it. I am absolutely thrilled that I did. Calla is the biggest reason for loving this book. She is an excellent heroine. She’s strong, courageous, tough, and definitely not your typical YA girl. I love her! The relationships within and between the packs were absolutely fascinating to me. I loved the variety and mix of the pack members. They were all their own people as well as members of the pack. I really enjoyed the relationship between Bryn and Calla, although I wish it had been present more. There is a love triangle. I know that makes many of you sigh, and me along with you. Shay and Ren are both good, decent characters. I was not sure which one I liked, even as I finished the book. As I have thought it over though, I think I am definitely more in love with Ren. I am not sure why, but I had a hard time liking Shay. I do kind of feel, however, that he was the one I was supposed to like. I am still hoping that Ren and Calla have a chance though. I love the world the author created. The balance and power between the Guardians and the Keepers. Plus you have the mysterious Searchers. I love the mythology and history that is given to the characters and their world. It is a tense, mysterious read that kept me interested and intrigued. I do not know what else to say beyond how much I really loved it. I would like to note that there is some content that tips this more towards older readers. Some of the moments, especially between Ren and Calla are a bit steamy, so just beware before handing this to a young reader.Otherwise, go read this!

From the Publisher America Is in the Heart. This autobiography of the Filipino poet describes his boyhood in the Philippines, his voyage to America, and his years of hardship and despair as an itinerant laborer following the harvest trail in the rural West. Bulosan does not spare the reader any of the horrors that accompanied the migrant's life; but his quiet, stoic voice is the most convincing witness to the terrible events he witnessed.

The introduction of Kalona adds a level to the story that I don't particularly care for.
I bought this book from a science fiction/fantasy bookseller at a sci-fi convention where I was on author's panels. At first I balked at the $17 price tag but it was well worth it. As a novelist who started then abandoned a novel set in the 1812 era in Russia, I know the value of not just good characters, but good research even for a fantasy novel, and Kent does it beautifully. I wrote the second fan letter I have ever sent to him to thank him for this. There is a sequel and I just ordered that from Amazon as I want to KEEP this book for my shelf.
