Second time I tried to read this book. If I didn't have to take it back to the library, I might have finished it. However, it is never a good sign when it takes me that long to get into a book. I just don't really like all the characters. Plus, I never feel like the characters behave appropriately to the time period in which the novels are set. The combination of those two faults makes it rather difficult for me to read the book to the end, and it annoys me that the series just keeps on continuing.

** spoiler alert ** I enjoyed this book. It was a mostly solid continuation of Atumn. In some ways it felt like it was rehashing earlier events. This book opens with a new group of survivors who experience the disease striking everyone down, then the rise of the dead. As in the first book they're isolated at first but eventually consolidate in one place. There were enough new characters introduced that I sometimes had a hard time remember who was who. About halfway through the book the survivors from the first book are reintroduced and we're caught up on what they've been doing since the end of the last book. The added element this time is the the existence of an underground army base which the survivors are trying to reach. The zombies seem to be at the same point in their evolution as they were at the end of the first book so it feels like that part of the plot didn't really advance.

I am a little jealous of Ron Clark, mostly because I am also a little in awe of them. On the one hand, I think a lot of his advice will be useful for me in my classroom. On the other hand, some of his advice scares me to death -- because how can I ever live up to Ron Clark? Anyway, as I've mentioned before, he's one of the few people famous for being a great teacher whose book I have actually enjoyed reading.

Most of this information I already knew and trying to motivate the reader by calling them names and using foul language every other sentence turned me off and I'm not easily offended.

I have to say I enjoyed seeing John fumble a bit when it comes to Vicky.

I'd like to say this book presents the complexity of the death penalty debate in a way you rarely see - capital punishment is such a polarizing issue - but because I came to book from one specific side, I'm not actually sure. The contrasts among the various murderers the book introduces, especially the two main murderers, are fascinating, though.

I have all sorts of notations in this book. My favorite quote is "I'm not afraid to compete. It's just the opposite. Don't you see that? I'm afraid I will compete- that's what scares me. That's why I quit the Theater Department. Just because I'm so horribly conditioned to accept everybody else's values, and just because I like applause and people to rave about me, doesn't make it right. I'm ashamed of it. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of not having the courage to be an absolute nobody. I'm sick of myself and everybody else that wants to make some kind of a splash."
My newphew's favorite and he's a tough critic.

Some strong points, but inaccurate details about Seville and the Giralda were very annoying, especially when a major scene takes place in the Giralda tower. Also, the ending puzzle was so blatantly obvious, the fact that all the NSA characters took so long to figure it out was laughable.
