I'm giving this five stars and I'm only on page 80. It's probably not for everyone, but so far I'm finding it to be ridiculously awesome. Think "Lord of the Flies" but with satirical teenage beauty pageant contestants...

The most moving and strongest book I have ever read.

I did like this book, but I can't give it a blanket rec because I know its flaws. Firstly, this book has a pretty unbalanced structure. It works from two different first person narrators, Mildmay and Felix, who don't meet until halfway through the book. The book could really have started from that point. Mildmay is going on pretty much as normal. This is not to say stuff doesn't happen to him, because it does. Things that are significant on a personal level, things that show you the way Melusine the city works. They just don't really effect the plot at all. They're important because they happen to him, but not really to anything else. Meanwhile, Felix is involved in huge, city-shaking stuff. Felix is also given grand, dramatic (melodramatic) angst. Nothing so bad it can't be made worse! No torture inflicted that can't be topped! And all the while, the cause of or method of grand events! Mildmay's life is mundane in comparison. But I like Mildmay's pieces more. His voice is more interesting and I like getting a feel for the world. So it's a flawed book, but one I keep pressing on friends anyway. I liked it. Friends that don't usually like fantasy like it. It has a lot of good points, including a great world set up and great character set ups. It has an actual eye for human relationships, the way people change and the way they don't. I even liked Felix, which given that's he's attractive, with a traumatic past and a tendency to act like an utter bastard when he's in a good mood, magically gifted, etc. is saying something. Liking Mildmay is easy, liking Felix means that the writer did something right.

Entertaining mystery set in Regency London. Great for vegging out.

Amazing tale of a woman who ran an out-call service as if it were any other business, and how she succeeded. Her employees were well treated (to the point where they could refuse calls that made them uncomfortable) and well paid, and by concentrating on quality instead of quality she made a solid business. In my mind, this book is further proof that sex work doesn't have to be nasty, illicit and degrading and that this should be completely legal.

I would rather dig out my eyeballs with a melon baller than read this book again. I hate it with the heat of a thousand fiery burning suns.

this book was my sister's. she liked douglas coupland, and because she was so much older and wise than i, i followed her instruction. i remember i staked myself out in the family dining room, surrounded by fragile glass and crystal that only my mom knew the origins of. the supple nature of the room matched the frail character, the girl, who falls into a myserious coma...for like, twenty years or whatever. coupland stresses her diet and tendency to gobble speed so that she may achieve maximum talent while on the beaches during her spring break. but, alas, the coma traps her in, and she remains. the best part of the book is that which i refuse to tell you, but, in the end, this plot line envelops the story. i read this book a very long time ago have not opened it since. but it's a strange nugget of fiction that is forever burned into my memory. good book. great author.

This book is about conjoined twins, written in the first person, at different times from each of the twins, if I remember correctly. It was pretty good but not very cheerful...

This book has a little bit of everything - intrigue, romance, scandal ... murder. As in all Nora Roberts novels, the overall outcome is more than predictable. However, it was the backstory and what led to that outcome that made this book so worthwhile. I definitely recommend this book to someone who is looking for something more than the typical romance novel that only focuses on 2 main characters with all other characters playing the roles of window dressing.
