Read this not long after The Last Resort, and I liked it better--a little meatier, as the author's father's backstory is fascinating.

"Time is not the great teacher. Experience is. A man may live a whole life, but if he never leaves his home to experience that life, he dies knowing nothing. A mere child who has suffered and lived can be the wiser of the two." Marguerite Argeneau

A good, fast paced, fun summer read. Not too deep but it doesn't pretend to be.

Greta began this book, but didn't finish it. I liked it a lot. I thought the author had an amazing way of thinking as a child thinks. Parts of it were funny and very touching. I think you might like it, Kristin. It is the story of a woman who has been kidnapped for seven years and kept by an older man in a shed in his back yard. (It is fictional, although it sounds a lot like Jaycee Dugard who was held for 17 years or something.)Anyway the woman has a five year old boy who has never left the "room."

I liked his second (Teach like your hair's on fire) better. His voice still carries hints of righteousness in this one.
A little difficult to get into, but the world of memory is fascinating. One thought, why memorize all those decks of cards? Or all those digits? It doesn't improve every day life remembering where it is most needed. Practice at it though may have long lasting benefits.

This book just might turn you into a competitive birder. It takes place in 1998 and follows three men on their individual quests to view as many bird species as possible in North America, within a single year—a contest referred to in the birding world as a Big Year. They travel thousands of miles on planes, helicopters, boats, and cars and find themselves in the remotest corners of the country, including the far-flung Aleutian island of Attu. In the end, they each record over 700 unique birds, with the winner tallying an amazing 745 birds for the year, a record that many believe will never be matched. I enjoyed reading about the different backgrounds and childhoods of these three passionate birders, who couldn’t be more different from each other or the common stereotype of the geeky bird-watcher. I came away from the book with respect for their drive and persistence in finding rare and difficult birds, but also a sense that the competition itself took away much of the joy of birding for these men. To me, a nice walk spotting common, local birds is preferable to simply racing to check birds off a list without even stopping to enjoy them. This book, by a local Denver Post writer, is being made into a movie, which is opening soon. I’ll definitely go and see it.

This is one of my favorite books ever and I can't wait for the movie to come out.
