I loved this book! The beginning was a bit slow, but that quikcly changed and when I finished the book I just there thinking I want more. She can't end the book here, I want to read more. Since I picked up book 1 in this series I just loved it. The Rising starts off a bit slow paced, even though I re-read book The Calling before starting The Rising I still had some difficulties getting into the story. Also I missed the setting from the 2 previous books, there is no forest around at first, but then as soon as the pace picks up I couldn't put it down. I just had to know what was going to happen and how they would meet Cloe and if this book would have a happy ending and if so how would the achieve it. And I wanted to learn more about their powers. The Rising has some great action packed scenes. The story is just as great and the pervious books and I liked all the twists and turns I was surprised a few times where the story took us, but I enjoyed every second of it. And then the ending is just perfect, although I wished some things happened earlier in the book. I think the ending was just perfect, everything was wrapped up nicely and I liked what happened. Nevertheless I still felt like it wasn't enough. I wanted to know what would happen later, how their lives would be now. I just wanted more of the story and the characters and everything. And I am so sad this series is over now. The characters are another thing I love about this series. The characters are all so real and believeable. Maya is one of the best main characters I have read about, I love how she can be a bit of a geek and how she makes mistakes and then later actually realized she made a mistake and how strong she is, while also needing help. She is such an amazing character and really if Kelley Armstrong would write a series about the rest of her life I would gladly read it. I love her connection with nature and the animals and how much she cares about her friends. And then Daniel, he is such an awesome friend, he is always there for Maya and I can't imagine she could have a better friend than him. The other characters are great too, I also really got to like Corey in this book and how he tries to deals with powers and brings humour to the group. There is less about Rafe and Annie than I expected to be in this book. And I still can't get a good idea of who Haley is, but she really shows some strenght a few times in this book and her character really grew on me. She was also really honest and I liked that about her, she easily admits she hates the running while no one else dares to say it. If was also great when they finally met the crew from the Darkest Powers series. The characters still felt like the same character they were in the Darkest Powers series and it was great to see them being incorporated in this series and see them all from another point of view. We also learned quite a bit more about other side characters and some characters made a surprising turn. Turning out more good or evil than I expected. There is also some world building in this book, at the end of The Calling I still hadn't a good idea of some of their powers and quite a bit is added to that in this book, although I actually would've liked learning more about them. There is still a whole lot about their powers that isn't explained. Some parts of the story and explanations are a bit too much telling instead of showing and some of the explanations about their powers were a bit vague and I am still not sure what the extend of their powers is. To conclude: The Rising is an awesome ending to an awesome series. I loved it so much and I am so sad this series is over, because I just want to read more about Maya and her friends. After a slow start the story really took of and I just wanted to keep reading. I really love the characters in this series and I think Maya is one of the best main characters I have read about. She is just awesome!

Blood Blockade Battlefront Volume 1, a trade-paperback collection, by Yasuhiro Nightow is a new mini series from the creator of Trigun. This black and white manga has a publication date of September 14 2011. In this new series, the thin wall between the world we know and the netherworlds has ruptured in New York City, trapping the creatures that have crossed over and the residents already there trapped together inside an impenetrable bubble. When Blood Blockade Battlefront begins, New York City's residents of all natures have been stuck with each other for several years, though as with any closed society not everyone is happy. Creatures from the netherworld want more, and some want to breach that bubble and roam the world at large. While there is a police force, it is generally up to a team of super humans to keep evil plans from working and to keep people safe. Readers are introduced to this group along with their newest recruit who happens to have something special as the rest of the team, even though he might not be who they bargained for. Leo is young, tenderhearted and has a unique eye for the creatures wandering the street. Leo has a handicapped sister and family on the other side of that bubble, and some guilt related to an incident during a family vacation to look through the fog obscuring the besieged New York City. He is desperate to make money to support his family, and jumps at the chance to join the organization, despite a minor issue of mistaken identity. There are quirky characters, insane creatures, wacky humor and fast action throughout the manga. The artistry is amazing and the story one that I want to follow to the conclusion. Fans of manga, particular the blend of humor and high action found in Trigun and other Nightow works, should add this to their must read list. Those that want to get started in reading manga might want to try Blood Blockade Battlefront, since it shows how fun and exciting this branch of the style can be. Those that do not enjoy manga, or graphic novels in general, are not likely to be swayed to sudden fandom, however it might give the necessary push to those wavering on the brink.
