A nice change of pace fantasy novella from a sci-fi author.

Dante's Journey is a modern retelling of the original Dante's Inferno. When drug lord Filippo Argenti kills his family, Detective Joe Dante pursues him through the seven rings of hell literally. Joe is seeking revenge but his mysterious guide, Virgil DiMini has other ideas. It has been many years since I read The Inferno (read decades) so I won't try to compare the two books. I will say that I enjoyed this book a lot. There are enough twists and turns to satisfy any mystery reader and the depiction of hell and its inhabitants certainly satisfied my love of fantasy. Dante's Journey is definitely a roller coaster ride through hell but it is so worth the price of admission.

My general review of the Wayfarer Redemption series: A lot of prophecy-based fantasy I've read revolves around good overcoming evil, usually with relatively little in the way of serious struggle or loss. The Wayfarer Redemption series blows that approach out of the water. These books are gritty, gruesome, graphic, intense and filled with content that will keep your blood stirred. The good guys fall short of grace, the bad guys are misunderstood and the most redeemable, punished and flawless character in the book lives with the worst fate of the entire planet. You can't help but invest in these characters, share their joy, rage at their hardships and it keeps you always guessing on your toes. I've read few other books that do as good a job making sure the good side takes as many hits in the struggle as the bad guys do which makes it feel more realistic. I highly recomend this series to a mature audience of sci-fi, fantasy authors that are looking for something really different.
Jennifer gets a funeral home given to her when her uncle dies. She goes from VA to FL and a whole new way of life begins for her and her two boys. Her mom has her own opinions but trys to keep herself busy with the Red Hatters. A good fast read and something a little different.

10/4/2009: Nigh overwhelming. I could not, right now, tell you what this book is about, to be quite honest. Possibilities: connection (utter impossibility of, absolute miracle of), love (miracle/perplexity of), time (oh my god, time), human beings as glaciers. Prose poured out of a jug; read this in a day, partially out of necessity due to it being a school assignment, but about a third of the way through, Woolf's particular rhythms, fluid shifts in point of view, meld of the exterior/interior just carries one. Master of the semi-colon, parentheses within parentheses --Woolf is a writer after my own heart. 5/30/2013: I think I'll read this once a year. 6/4/2013: I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH.

Listened to audiobook version on lengthy car ride. Entirely spellbound by Campbell Scott's narration and Hillebrand's writing. Enjoyed how she wove the lives of Seabiscuit's owner, trainer, and jockeys into the narrative so that I came to care about the entire team. Although a part of history, the book so well written and the narration so well done it felt very much of the moment.

I really have enjoyed this series. I actually think I liked this one better than the first one. I felt like I knew the characters better so it was a quicker read. I will be starting the third one soon!

This is a serious book. I got into soccer after watching the 2010 World Cup and wanted to explore the game. For someone with little background in soccer (particularly someone unfamiliar with the history of the game), this is probably not a recommended book, as it is VERY thorough analysis of tactics. Nonetheless, it's recommended to those who are a little more knowledgeable, because it is such a thorough treatment, by someone who is an expert in the subject matter, and who doesn't talk down to his readers.

Just re-read this one. P.J. Tracy has a new huge fan in me. I couldn't wait to read this one after the wonderful "WANT TO PLAY". I thought the first few chapters were dull compared to their previous novel, but as "Live Bait" progresses and as the case unfolds dramatically, the pace quickens. The dialogues are still top-notch. Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth are the starts of this book -I love them. I have to say that again all the characters in this story are authentic and human and that's why I give it a 5. It is not often you read that policemen are so cool and dedicated and good-hearted. And for me, another favorite character in this book was definitely Jack Gilbert. Aah, could a character get more genuine than Jack? Also, I really appreciate how the romantic side of the characters is approached here (well you need to read the books in order to understand their relationship): it's not openly described & steamy on the pages but there so many honest & unvarnished feelings expressed in the thoughts & words of the characters that it has a more profound effect on the reader, in my opinion. The doubts, the fear of getting hurt appeals very much to me. I love the vulnerabitly of Leo & Grace's relationship.
