I remember now why I don't re-read books. What was a memory of a darkly romantic story gave way on a recent re-read to my horror at the storyline. Just awful and miserable.

Wow. Been 2 or 3 months since my last five star read (a lot of solid 4 star ones though), but this one qualifies. started it last night, stayed up way too late, then finished it today when I should have been spending time with my family. I expected the book to be good - I didn't necessarily expect it to be great. It's fast-paced, relentless, just the right balance of simple and rich writing. A compelling conflict, compelling characters, and numerous twists. Basically, a large portion of Americans have gone crazy and want to kill (literally and ASAP) all the others. Yes, I know one could joke that we're already there, but read this and you won't be making those jokes any more. The book is from the point-of-view of a husband and wife and two kids who are trying to escape the people who want to kill them, which is just about everyone. And we feel their pain and their doubts, along with their bravery and persistence. The situation doesn't feel real of course, but the internal turmoil of the characters - that's as real as it gets. And that's the focal point of the book. There's plenty of action as well, but it doesn't dominate, it supports. And as I said, you can't put this book down.

Cute modern day love story. Not my favorite of McClures but not a disappointment by any means!
This reads like a novel and is a really quick read. Totally shocking though and makes me want to learn more. Highly recommend.

The Ice Queen begins with warning the reader to "Be Careful what you wish for." As a child, the protagonist wishes in an angry whim that she never see her mother again; promptly, her mother is killed in a car accident. Later in life, she mockingly wishes to be struck by lightning--another wish granted. Throughout the book, she is fascinated with both death and fairytales, two elements which weave in and out of the fabric of the novel in beautiful forms. The way lightning transforms its victims and gives them superhuman qualities presents itself, in many ways, like a fairytale. How people have "defeated" or "cheated" death. This is the first Hoffman book I've read, and I felt like the writing was trying way too hard to be poetic. At times it felt monotonous. At one point I recall the protagonist describing a sexual encounter as "so real, so here, so now," and then on the next page continuing with "so now, so real, so...." There are these rhythmic generalities that the reader is hit over the head so hard with that at times it almost feels satirical. Then there's our character, who is painfully stagnant throughout the book. Granted, she has reason to be depressed, but the author doesn't even grant her a wild mood swing now and then. When she's not feeling remorseful or self-pitying, she remains only lukewarm. The Ice Queen is a novel I feel like could have been remarkable if only told with a different tone and a shifted point of view.

A story about what it takes to make a tortilla. It starts with plowing the soil and planting the seeds, waiting until it will grow tall and then until the corn dries out so it can be grounded to the flour. After that, the flour gets transported to the factory where the dough is made. The dough will be cut into small pieces that will be flatten and then backed. After that, tortilla will be packed and delivered to our tables. Very good book with beautiful painting-like illustrations, I really like it. It teaches students about the steps it requires to produce something.

Oh, God, I want to squeeze this book and hugs it tight, IT IS THAT GOOD. It woves every element I love flawlessly: (1) a different take on vampire/shapeshifter myth; which makes it very interesting. how shapeshifters are created to be protector of vampires and to actually provide the blood needed (2) likeable, amazing, and wonderful characters. this is a "soulmate" theme without actually pushing it into that instant love/mating theme. both Shaun and Rannon are two halves of one soul, but they need fourteen years to finally be together. so there is enough angst and yearning; but even when they meet again, they cannot immediately BE together, because Shaun doesn't know what he is (a vampire) and Rannon has no idea how to tell him. not when shapeshifters are murdering vampires, and Rannon is a shapeshifter. but the angst doesn't turn into self-pity or crying galore, and that is just PERFECT for me. (3) perfect build-up with a murder of Shaun's dad, then there is that sense of running from danger element, that keeps me turning pages (or pressing next on my Kindle) and don't want to stop (4) hot but at the same time tender sex between the two guys. but the "amount" is enough, it doesn't "crowd" the story ... it a story that is emotionally intense yet heartbreaking (in a good way) and a bit melancolic with a touch of danger that just pulls my heart from the get go. i love it, LOVE IT! i did say that i wanted to hug this story, right?

Flashback: To be honest, I actually first heard of the famous “The Dark Phoenix Saga” through an episode of the 90s “X-Men” cartoon series and that was probably my favorite episode of the entire series! Now, I had the opportunity to read this story in its original comic form and I was totally blown away! Chris Claremont had a huge reputation of being the best “X-Men” writer in history and after reading this saga, I am starting to believe that and John Byrne's illustrations clearly define the true art of this exciting saga that defined “X-Men” history! What is the story? After the X-Men defeated Proteus, they head back to New York to their secret headquarters and they are surprised to see Professor Xavier back at the headquarters. However, the X-Men will soon realize that a secret and powerful organization known as the Hellfire Club is watching their every move and they have plans for Jean Grey and her phoenix powers! Can the X-Men defeat this powerful organization of mutants? Read this comic to find out! What I liked about this book: Chris Claremont's writing: Oh my goodness! After I heard that Chris Claremont was known as the author who started the popularity of the X-Men, I just had to check out the “Dark Phoenix Saga” for myself and I was astonished at what I read! I loved the way that Chris Claremont provided a detailed plot about how Jean Grey has to cope with a terrible power inside of her and how the X-Men have to come to terms of possibly destroying her to save the universe. I also loved how much emotion Chris Claremont put into this volume as the other X-Men obviously did not want to kill her and it was great seeing the close relationship that Cyclops and Jean Grey share with each other. I also loved how Chris Claremont gives the audience enough information regarding the last few issues to help us understand the story much better and I will admit that the first time I have read this comic; I was a bit frustrated with all the words on one page. But then I realized that the deep and detailed plot of the story on each page actually became more interesting as the comic goes on and it really helped me understand the characters even better. I also loved the new roster of the X-Men which included Cyclops, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Beast and it was even more exciting seeing the introduction of a young Kitty Pryde and Dazzler! John Byrne's illustrations: I just loved John Byrne’s illustrations in this comic book! John Byrne gives us an old school styled look to the original X-Men (Wolverine’s signature yellow and blue outfit, Nightcrawler’s black and white outfit and Colossus’ red and yellow outfit) and it just reverts me back to the good old days when most comic books were illustrated in that old school way! There were so many memorable images in this comic such as Jean Grey reverting to the Dark Phoenix and you can see that she is truly beauty, but always has a frightening expression on her face as she destroys everything in her path. The image that truly stood out the most for me was the image of Wolverine being stuck in the sewers and he states: “Okay, suckers---you’ve taken yer best shot! NOW IT’S MY TURN!!” This image was so memorable and brilliantly done to me because it truly showed Wolverine looking so menacing when the Hellfire Club tried to kill him and this image was a inspiration for Joss Whedon’s run of “Astonishing X-Men” when the same thing was done to Kitty Pryde. John Byrne does an excellent job at making the characters extremely detailed from making the rivers have ripples to presenting shocked looks on the characters’ faces especially the X-Men’s shock at discovering the Dark Phoenix. What made me feel uncomfortable about this comic: Probably the only problem with this comic is that since it was written around the late 70s to early 80s, there tends to be too much dialogue and explanations of the previous issues filling up the page and many readers who are new to the X-Men franchise might be frustrated with reading all this extra information about the situation, just like I was the first time. Sometimes it slows the story down than necessary, but at the same time, it gives the audience enough information about the situation at hand. Final Thoughts: Overall, “The Dark Phoenix Saga” is the saga that truly defined the true storytelling of the “X-Men” franchise and is currently on my top favorite “X-Men” storylines list along with Joss Whedon’s “Astonishing X-Men” run and hopefully, the current “X-Men” would have the same drama and wonderful storytelling that “The Dark Phoenix Saga” had.
