I just couldn't buy into the book completely. All the relationships in the book feel too awkward to me. I think it was the dialog that bothered me. Constantly while reading the book I would think "Who talks like this?" I imagine that this is all largely due to the translation. The overall story however was beautiful.

I'd like to give this 4 1/2 stars, actually; but it's not quite a 5. Smart chicklit with characters who aren't so stupid you want to throw the book against a wall repeatedly. The main character here is a tad boy-crazy, but the writing is fun and clever. Highly enjoyable.

I remember seeing the movie version of this years ago and thinking it wasn't anything special. But as always, the book was hugely better than the movie. It really captured the yearning to understand others motives for suicide. For the boys in the story it became an obsession because it was so alien for them, the girls lives were just so different to theirs. I found the writing in this book to be beautiful. I appreciated that the author did not try and force meaning onto the girls suicides and just left the boys to wonder without giving an answer.

Amy is tired of always having the 'burden' of taking care of her developmentally disabled sister. Fortunately for her, her Aunt Clare has recently moved back to town to pack up the house that belonged to Amy's great-grandparents. Amy takes refuge there and finds in the attic an amazing dollhouse that is the exact replica of the house that contains it. Then, the dolls start moving by themselves, re-creating the scene of the great-grandparents' murder. What is the dollhouse trying to tell them? This was easily one of my favorite books in my pre-teen years. My copy is incredibly worn from repeated readings. Upon re-reading as an adult, I find it holds up well. Amy's conflict with her sister is very genuine and heartfelt. The mystery of the dollhouse is still suspenseful and reveals a satisfying secret. Aunt Clare is a realistic adult and quite three-dimensional. Recommended for any pre-teen girl.
