recently, my dog ate this book (with my notes on the text, even!) he must have sensed that although the poems are luminous, and at times absolutely startling (see "self-portrait as the gesture between them") the "i'm talking about art/movies/physics and giving you a lesson in the meaning of life" device begins to wear thin. which is why her last great work was, in my opinion, her selected ("the dream of the unified field")was really the best. maybe only sharon olds can get away with the "i am about to tell you something incredible important" because she doesn't examine something outside life, but simply examines life?

After years of some juvenile anti-DeLillo thing, I picked up this book and immediately began laughing and thinking. Two things all books should make people do. Funny, insightful, smart as hell, White Noise casts a dark cloud over the US narrative of consumption, intelligentsia, popular culture and exposes our self-consuming fear of death. Absolutely brilliant.

. maybe my favorite collection of stories by r.b. couldn't stop reading this....
Finally finished the book after a very long break. Not all the essays were good, but plowing through them sort of gave me a clearer picture of the various issues and challenges Japan is facing today.
Along with W.H. Auden, one of that rare breed of palatable 20th-century English poets.
I thought it was very coincidental when I saw my friend, Katie Stirling's name in the credits...and recalled the day I was reading another book by this author, and Katie told me she copy edited this book. Strange, strange.
all time fav

I really loved this book!!!You can tell from the 5 star rating that i've actually started to take seriously. Before i read Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma,i gave five stars to a book kind of easily. Now after Forbidden and this book i decided to re-rate all the books i've read. Now back to my review,a huge role for my love for this book played the characters.I loved Brittany because she wasn't one of those beautiful rich girls who don't have brain to think beyond what they see. Most of these girls are immature and remain that way for the rest of their lives(not that I can blame them considering the environment they grow up in).Though they were times that i seriously wanted to hit Brittany(especially in the beginning) i liked how she matured during the book and how she learned to accept things and fight for what she wanted.Maybe i connected with her for that reason, because i fight with all i have got for what i believe...But we sure as hell can't forget Alex.He was the reason she changed and matured. But i liked him more because he loved his family unconditionaly and did everything he could to protect them. What i particularly liked in this book is that even though it is based on an idea we've all read books about before, with the help of the characters and the plot and of course the writting it differes from all the others. I recommend this book to everyone.Especially those who are tired of reading paranormal romance and want something different(that's how I started reading it).

One of my all time favorite books. I wished I had read it earlier in life.
